Portfolio

We used this framing routine with a group of 6th grade inclusion students.  There were about 26 students in the class.  There are about 10 Sped students in the class.  We completed this routine in about a class period which is 45 minutes.  We used this as a review for our test on Sequences.  We had been working on this topic for about a week prior to completing this routine. This was our 3/4 period class.  It meets around 9:30 - 11:15 daily.

My Co-Teaching partner and I used the Framing Routine with our group of 19 second graders. There are eight students with disabilities and one student with a 504 Plan. When we plan to use the Framing Routine, this portion of the lesson takes approximately 20 – 25 minutes. We have used this device across the curriculum routinely this school year. The device is great for introducing a unit, reviewing for future references or studying for a test. Our students appear be comfortable and successful using this device.

Review

Implementation

We co-teach two English 11 inclusion classes in which we have used the Framing Routine. The first class consists of 26 students, 6 with IEPs, and the second class has only 13 students, also 6 with IEPs. Whenever we incorporate the Framing Routine into the lesson plan, the Framing Routine portion usually takes about 15 minutes. We only use the frame once per unit.

Implementation Portfolio

We implemented the use of Framing in our Algebra I A and B classes. The classes are made up of both male and female students in grades 9-11. The largest class is consists of 24 students. The class has 15 students with IEP’s, behavior problems, and students who are repeating the class.

We have used the framing routine as an introduction to a unit, as a review of a unit, and as a device that is built throughout the unit. Our students have adapted to using the routine, and actively participate in the building of the frame.

The time required to complete a frame varies on the amount of information that is included and whether or not is is used as an introduction, is being built throughout the unit, or as a wrap up. As an introduction, we often rely on a student’s ability to access prior knowledge and this may require multiple questioning strategies to get the desired response. For this reason, using the frame as an introduction may take a larger chunk of time. Using it during the lesson only takes a few minutes each day. We have successfully used this as a warm up to start the day. As a summary for a lesson, we have found that more students will contribute during the routine. However, each of these uses have been beneficial and we like to change it up and come up with new creative ways to incorporate the frames into our lessons.

Extension Activity for Least Common Multiple (LCM)

There are 21 students in our 4th grade classroom. There are six children that are inclusion with special education services. We have been implementing The Framing Routine for five months now.
