Implementation

We have used the framing routine periodically throughout the year for a variety of reasons.  Many of the students in the group benefit from frequent review of vocabulary and concepts, visual graphic organizers, and the breakdown of main ideas and essential details. It is able to be used for introduction of new vocabulary, making abstract concepts more concrete, and for review. It is so flexible, and it is able to be utilized for all subjects.

Student Interview

I interviewed of the students from the group about the framing technique.  This student has an IEP and struggles in the content area for which this particular lesson was used.
How is this technique useful? The student thinks this method is good and helps her understand the concept better. She stated that is was hard at first but has become easier with practice. She says that it helps her think about the main ideas and make connections between them.
When do you think this technique is useful for you?The student stated that it really helps her remember and understand math vocabulary because math is difficult for her. She also claimed that it is very helpful in history and science, and she gave several examples of how it helps her remember content. (Examples included learning about the 5 presidents, steps of the scientific method, and parts of an atom.)

Student Demographic

We work in an inclusion classroom consisting of a heterogeneous group of 21 students.  Many of these students receive special education services. Of the twenty-one students, eight have IEP's, two have 504 plans, two have speech services, and thress receive ESOL services.  Six students were included in the selected small group. Five of the six students are receiving one of the above services.

I used the Framing routine in my small group of reading students.

I work with a small group of 6 first graders. Two of these students receive special education services. All six students are in the lowest reading class and receive intense reading instruction. I used the framing routine for one week to compare two stories that we had been reading.
