Using approved apps
I learned to look at our district approved app list when looking for an appropriate app for students and to reach out for assistance if I come across a component of an app that may be questionable.

Student Data
In this course I learned what is expected of me as an educator. This course extended my knowledge of how to better keep student data from not being shared and ultimately keeping the students safe.

Reflection
I learned that you should be checking with your district before you use and app. It is about more that identity. Advertising and exploiting students and parents financially is also an issue!

CHECK THE DISTRICT LIST FIRST
I need to check the list of apps that have been vetted by the district first. If an app has not been vetted, I need to present it to the correct IT person in order to have him/her review the language of the Terms.

I learned there is a lot more to student privacy than just names, addresses and personal info!
I had never heard of COPPA, the Children's online privacy protection that helps protect against the data collection of children under the age of 13. I also never knew that the OPT out selection was mandatory for students under the PPRA. I am glad to know that if I am unsure of an app, I can contact the IT person at our school for guidance, rather than incur that risk on myself.

New information and recalled information on student privacy
New information that I learned about included what to look for in apps that could cause an app to be considered safe or unsafe for use (ex. data mining, etc.) I was reminded of the high priority of keeping a student's personally identifiable information private according to laws like FERPA.

Only use district approved apps!
I learned that students under 13 have special protections in place to assure their personal information is kept safe. This reaffirmed to me that I should only use district approved apps for my student as I am in no way qualified to make the decision as to if they are safe or not on my own.

Caution
I learned that student data can be shared easily on certain apps. and as a teacher i need to be more careful of what apps I choose. I have always been aware of FERPA but I need to be aware of other laws that protect our families.

Student Confidentiality
I learned that an app should be approved by the district before using and if it is not, I can reach out to my IT department to have the app vetted for approval. It is always a good reminder that student information should be kept confidential.
