I learned how to know if apps are safe for students to use. I learned that the apps have to go through a vetting process. They have to be safe, secure and restricted. I have used a lot of the apps that were listed. :)

I learned some specifics of data safety as it relates to our students. Also, the importance of looking into apps used in the classroom to ensure safety and how data may be collected. It enhanced my knowledge of some things I already knew and helped me understand some things about data privacy I was not aware of.

I learned that student privacy is more than id numbers and grades. It did reaffirm that privacy is about keeping the students safe.

Reflection of Student Data Privacy

I learned when looking at apps for students, they should be secure, safe, and have restricted access. I also learned about different apps that can be used in the classroom and how to use them safely. I knew that schools needed parental consent to release private information on a student.

I learned more in depth about what the "terms of service" meant and what it means to just click the "I accept" button (as I am guilty as charged sometimes in my personal use of apps). It reaffirmed what I already knew and gave more detail about why my district already has a process in place to keep student's safe.

I learned that student privacy includes much more than the student's name, but also includes health information. I knew that apps had a way to track data, so the content could be geared towards student's interests.

I learned about the different laws for student privacy. I had prior knowledge of Terms of Agreement and how it can be used to collect data.

What I learned and what I already knew and is now reinforced...

This was a very informative training. I already knew the importance of student data privacy, especially the FERPA laws. This training also reinforced the definition of privacy (Safe, Secure, Restricted). In completing this training, I learned how to utilize Common Sense Privacy Evaluations website. Moving forward, I will definitely be more cautious about the Apps being used.

Student Privacy

Before this training, when thinking about student privacy, the only concern I would typically think of was FERPA and personally identifiable information. Through this training, I learned how important it is to choose apps that manage students' data safely. I learned to always check if apps are district-approved before using them and to check with district IT if they are not yet approved. I learned that many apps Terms of Service will allow the app to mine data from users to allow marketing and advertising, which could result in violation of FERPA. I also learned about the Common Sense Privacy Evaluations website to see safety ratings of various popular education apps. I am thankful to have this knowledge moving forward with digital learning.

Heed Caution

I did not realize the data sharing issues schools are facing today with various companies.  This is  going to cause me to be cautious.
