Reflection for student privacy with online materials

This training refreshed what was already known and gave good resources for vetting sites that we are interested in using. It also gave better wording for our computer policy in class. Changing grades this year, will put me with a younger group. This means that my documents and explanations to the parents will vary a little bit more. I will need more parent involvement, due to the students being under 13, with some programs.

I learned that data privacy really means. I am now aware that data includes metadata and who has access to it and what they do with it.

District Approvals

Although an app is on the district approved list, there may still be unsafe features available to students.

feedback

While I knew the basics, like not sharing photos, complete names, identification numbers (such as phone numbers and ss# and birth dates) without parent consent, there was so much more I wasn't aware of.

Reading Terms of Service is more important that what I realized.

When you think of reading Terms of Service, I always have thought it was describing what the service is going to provide me, and also things that they are stipulating you can and can not do. I knew that there was other stuff included, but not necessarily the seriousness of it (like what they are going to do with your information).

I think that all the fine print is important, and this will make me more cautious in the future.

I learned that definitions of data is very broad so that it includes as much information as possible. Also, to protect from marketers.

It is essential that teachers follow District, State and Federal guidelines regarding student online privacy and safety.

Teachers are responsible to review District policies on Apps and use common sense caution.

I learned that some apps are not has safe with students data even tho its approved by your district.

What I already knew was only authorized people are allowed in students data.

What I've learned about protecting student privacy

"TOS" stands for Terms of Service agreement, and most people just click through them, not bothering even to consider what they represent.

Technical and Legal Professionals evaluate these statements to get a granular look at just what sorts of PII information can and cannot be shared, how and with whom.

I was unaware of the significance of meta-data, and that a clear policy is required to delineate expectations of how this data is managed and shared, as well.

Learned new information, especially on evaluating Terms of Service (that I can apply to my own app use!)

I had specific knowledge about data privacy, especially as it relates to FERPA, but it was helpful to review the multitude of situations where student data is shared. The process for vetting an app was very interesting - and Texas scored pretty low on the student data report card. :(

This course helped me reflect on FERPA and COPPA and look closer at PPRA.

This course helped me reflect on FERPA and COPPA and look closer at PPRA. We are usually very careful with students information in the classroom, online and on campus but sometimes not aware of the need to look at the important details as we work online. We need to do our best to protect all stakeholders as we try to educate students online.
It is important as we communicate in person and online with our students and their families.

Date privacy

I learned that schools need to make sure they vet apps and programs they provide students.
