Before this training, when thinking about student privacy, the only concern I would typically think of was FERPA and personally identifiable information. Through this training, I learned how important it is to choose apps that manage students' data safely. I learned to always check if apps are district-approved before using them and to check with district IT if they are not yet approved. I learned that many apps Terms of Service will allow the app to mine data from users to allow marketing and advertising, which could result in violation of FERPA. I also learned about the Common Sense Privacy Evaluations website to see safety ratings of various popular education apps. I am thankful to have this knowledge moving forward with digital learning.
