Formative assessment: Improve instruction and provide student feedback. Used continuously throughout the lesson. It serves as a gauge so student know where they need to improve. Help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that they need to work on. Used to check student comprehension. Help teachers recognize where students are struggling and address those problems. They are generally low stakes, which means that they have low or no point value.
Summative assessment: Used to measure student competency. Used at the end of the lesson. Used to gauge progress of grade-level goals. Used for grading and promotion to the next grade-level. The goal is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional period by comparing it against a standard or benchmark. They are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value.

Formative vs Summative

Formative assessment is a continuous form of assessment for the student and teacher. It is a way for the teacher to gauge understanding of what is being taught and it is a way for the student to see what he/she understands during the project. Formative assessments can be done in a variety of ways. For example, practice activities, quizzes, class discussion and rough drafts of papers or projects.

Summative assessment is more of a final assessment of the lesson or unit that was being taught. This is done more at the end of a lesson or unit to check for the students comprehension of the lesson and to see if they are ready to move onto the next level. This is usually a test or project that the student will complete to demonstrate their understanding of ALL the information presented throughout the lesson on unit.

Formative assessment is the assessment that is taken to improve instruction. The instructor can see where students are doing well and where they are struggling, so they can supplement the areas where they are struggling in. They are used throughout the unit and often. This kind of assessment is generally low stakes for students as it is made more for feedback and growth.

Summative assessment measures competency and is often done at the end of the unit. It is compared against a standard or benchmark. Oftentimes, these assessments are more high stakes and often have a higher point value assigned to them.

Definiton

Formative assessments are frequent check-ins to monitor student learning. Formative assessments help students identify their strengths and weakness while helping the teacher recognize these areas too. They are used to monitor student learning and understanding. These assessments allow teachers to provide ongoing feedback to students. Formative assessments are low stakes assessments.

On the other hand, summative assessments are high-stakes assessments. These assessments are used to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit. They are used to gain an overall, comprehensive understanding of student learning and comprehension. These assessments are used less frequently than formative assessments.

Formative assessment is what is most used in the classroom because it is what gauges our teaching. It tells us if we need to continue on the subject or if the students are mastering it so we can start throwing in new things. It also is how groups can be formed and what happens within the groups. I use FA as a way to ask myself "Am I teaching it well or do I need to find another angle to teach it from?" It shows improvement along the way instead of at the end.

Where a summative assessment is used as a way to test if a student has mastered the content before moving on no matter the outcome. I see it as an overall test and the end of teaching that content. It answers the question did I meet my goal of where I wanted them? I usually use summative assessments to gauge what I need to cover before state testing during our "review" weeks. Though out of the two I typically us formative over summative because formative is more beneficial to the students and myself.

Formative vs. Summative Assessment

Based on the article provided:

Formative assessment is an ongoing approach to monitoring student progress. It can be beneficial to both teachers and students. This can help identify student strengths, weaknesses and areas of improvement. Formative assessments are low stakes and may include demonstration of concepts or open-ended artifacts that can be improved upon.

Summative assessment is a one-time evaluation of student learning, usually at the end of a unit, that compares a student against an expected outcome. This helps benchmark students in relation to a standard. Summative assessments are high-stakes and may include an exam or final project that is complete when assessed.

summative/ formative

The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. Formative assessments help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work and help faculty recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately Formative assessments are generally low stakes, which means that they have low or no point value. Examples of formative assessments include asking students to: draw a concept map in class to represent their understanding of a topic, submit one or two sentences identifying the main point of a lecture, turn in a research proposal for early feedback

The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value. Examples of summative assessments include: a midterm exam, a final project, a paper, etc. Information from summative assessments can be used formatively when students or faculty use it to guide their efforts and activities in subsequent courses.

Formative assessments are given by the teacher to the students and usually takes the form of helpful comments to help them achieve the goal and do better.  They are usually not worth many if any points.  An example would be a rough draft for an essay.
Summative assessments are given by the teacher to students and are more evaluative of their learning.  These assessments are usually worth a large number of points and a bad score will hurt the student's grade.  An example would be a final exam or final project in the course.

2. Summative assessments are used at the end of the unit (i.e. a unit test).
3. Summative assessments are used to see how students are doing in regards to completing the grade-level concepts.
4. Teachers use summative assessments to grade and promote students to the next grade level.

Assessments

Formative assessments are to TRACK student progress. By doing this, you are allowing students to identify their strengths and weaknesses in content areas. This also allows teachers to understand where their student may be struggling in specific areas. Summative assessments are when you want to assess student learning at the end of a specific unit. These assessments include - but not limited to - midterms, final papers, or final exams.
