Formative assessment is the assessment that is taken to improve instruction. The instructor can see where students are doing well and where they are struggling, so they can supplement the areas where they are struggling in. They are used throughout the unit and often. This kind of assessment is generally low stakes for students as it is made more for feedback and growth.

Summative assessment measures competency and is often done at the end of the unit. It is compared against a standard or benchmark. Oftentimes, these assessments are more high stakes and often have a higher point value assigned to them.
