A formative assessment is an assessment given during a lesson to assess what students are beginning to learn. A formative assessment assesses what students have to review before the summative assessment. A summative assessment is an assessment given after a lesson or unit. A summative assessment evaluates the things that students have learned and remembered after the lesson is complete.

Formative vs Summative

Formative assessment is conducted throughout a unit to check in with how the students are understanding the content. This could be exit tickets, quick little 2 question slips, checkpoints, etc.

Summative assessment happens at the end of the unit and is to show how much the students have learned on the content cumulatively. Summative assessments are worth the most points because they cover the whole of the content taught.

Summative assessment is the assessment that we as teachers use at the end of a unit, semester, year, etc. We use this data to analyze how well students understand the content as a whole.
Formative assessment is used throughout a lesson, at the end of a lesson, and more casual. It can be as simple as a thumbs up/down at the end of a topic or a short check for understanding before the end of class.

1. Formative assessments are used consistently throughout a unit to assess progress and how far along students are during a specific unit. These assessments are also known as low-stakes assessments because of how much weight they carry, and due to how little content they have in them. Summative assessments are used to assess the entire unit and if the student can recall all the information taught throughout the unit. Summative assessments are also known as high-stakes assessments because of the weight they carry. As opposed to a low-stakes assessment, these assessments are greater in content.

Formative vs. Summative Assessments

Formative assessments are low-stakes assignments, quizzes, or reflections administered throughout a lesson or unit to gauge student comprehension of the material being taught. These activities provide teachers with information that can, in turn, help guide their instruction moving forward. Students can also use formative assessment to reveal specific trouble areas in their learning that may require more focus and study.

Summative assessments are high-stakes projects, exams, performances, or papers administered at the end of lesson or unit to evaluate overall student learning. The results of these assessments are compared against state standards to determine the achievement of specified knowledge or a particular skill. Similar to formative assessments, the results of summative assessments can be studied to guide lesson planning moving forward.

Formative vs. Summative

Formative assessments are used to improve/inform instruction. These could be quick checks for understanding using visual cues (thumbs up/thumbs down, etc.) or a pop quiz at the start of class. It could also be in the form of an exit ticket.

Summative assessments are used at the end of a topic/unit/semester/course to check for competency in the standards. These can be in form of end-of-unit tests or more formal assessments such as IREAD and ILEARN.

Formative vs. Summative Assessments

Formative assessments are used continuously throughout the lesson building process. Teachers give low stakes accountability tasks such as a Google Classroom question, a few second video response or a submission of a pre graded idea. These tasks are used to analyze the students' understanding up to that point in the lesson.  The teacher uses the information to decide the next step of instruction. The teacher answers questions such as, do the students need more information over an important competency or do they need more practice with the skill.  The students can use the formative assessment to compare where they should be within a certain learning range. Formative assessments are ongoing and should be used as check points within a lesson.

Summative assessments are used to measure a students competency at the end of a unit or large lesson.  Teachers can give a standard test or a project to complete this assessment. Summative assessments are high stakes and are usually a substantial percentage of a term's grade.  These acknowledge that the student has completed an acceptable understanding of the overall expected materials.  They serve as benchmarks for further progress onto another level.

Summative assessment is the end of a unit test or project. These are showing what the students know at the end of the unit and evaluated to see if the student is ready to move on to the next unit or next grade.

Formative vs. Summative Assessments

A formative assessment is an informal assessment that is used to monitor student learning throughout a lesson/unit. These assessments are used to check student comprehension, provide feedback on areas of strength and improvements to students, and to help educators alter and improve lessons. This assessment is generally low stakes and can be as simple as an exit slip.

A summative assessment is meant to evaluate student learning at the completion of a unit and is a high stakes assessment as it is generally measured against a standard or benchmark. These assessments can include tests, projects papers etc.
