Formative assessments are given by the teacher to the students and usually takes the form of helpful comments to help them achieve the goal and do better.  They are usually not worth many if any points.  An example would be a rough draft for an essay.
Summative assessments are given by the teacher to students and are more evaluative of their learning.  These assessments are usually worth a large number of points and a bad score will hurt the student's grade.  An example would be a final exam or final project in the course.
