Formative assessments are frequent check-ins to monitor student learning. Formative assessments help students identify their strengths and weakness while helping the teacher recognize these areas too. They are used to monitor student learning and understanding. These assessments allow teachers to provide ongoing feedback to students. Formative assessments are low stakes assessments.

On the other hand, summative assessments are high-stakes assessments. These assessments are used to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit. They are used to gain an overall, comprehensive understanding of student learning and comprehension. These assessments are used less frequently than formative assessments.
