Formative assessment is a continuous form of assessment for the student and teacher. It is a way for the teacher to gauge understanding of what is being taught and it is a way for the student to see what he/she understands during the project. Formative assessments can be done in a variety of ways. For example, practice activities, quizzes, class discussion and rough drafts of papers or projects.
Summative assessment is more of a final assessment of the lesson or unit that was being taught. This is done more at the end of a lesson or unit to check for the students comprehension of the lesson and to see if they are ready to move onto the next level. This is usually a test or project that the student will complete to demonstrate their understanding of ALL the information presented throughout the lesson on unit.
