Summative and Formative Assessments

I teach first grade math, reading, and writing. For my math class, we take an exit ticket daily where I keep track of what skill students understand and don't understand. I do this not only for  exit tickets but also during practice sheets. This form of assessment is summative assessment because it is for the improvement of skills throughout the module. When I do reading, I do monthly assessment of literacy foundation skills. Often I like to refer this as a formative assessment because it is a do you know it or don't know it type of assessment. Students will take the same test until they pass it before they move on to the next assessment.

Formative v Summative Assessments

Formative assessments are used to improve instruction and provide feedback. Also, formative assessments are used throughout the lesson. This allows students to be able to know how they are doing with the material, and where they need to improve. Teachers can use formative assessments to check for students understanding of the lesson material.

Summative assessments are used to measure students retention of the information/competency. These kinds of assessments are used at the end of each lesson. Summative assessments are used to gauge how students are doing in relation to the goals and benchmarks of the lesson/grade level. These allow for teachers to grade students and promote them to the next grade level.

Formative & Summative Assessments

Formative Assessment: A formative assessment is used to monitor student learning. These are low or no stakes assignments that are used to help both the teacher and the student understand where the student is at in their learning. Formative assessments will help reveal student strengths and weaknesses and help the teacher give constructive feedback to the student so that they can grow in their efforts to learn. Some examples of formative assessments include exit-tickets, quick-writes, and observations.

Summative Assessment: Summative assessments are used to evaluate a student's knowledge of a content area. These assessments are high stakes with high point values. They are at the end of big units. Some examples of summative assessments include final papers, standardized tests, and midterm exams.

Formative vs Summative Assessments

Formative assessments help the teacher monitor student learning. They provide the teacher immediate feedback that teachers can use to adjust their delivery of a lesson or make other improvements to their teaching and/or curriculum. They also help students know what their strengths and weaknesses are.
Summative assessments help the teacher evaluate student learning at the end of a unit or lesson. They are compared against a standard, and usually carry a high point value such as a midterm exam or final. Results are usually used to make adjustments in subsequent courses.

Formative and Summative Assessments

Assessment, in its various forms, is a crucial pillar of education- for better or worse. There are two main types of assessment: formative and summative. Formative is used more fluidly throughout the learning process. In general, formative assessments are meant to be quicker checks for understanding and areas for improvement! Formative assessments can take the form of end-of-chapter quizzes, exit tickets, or even on-the-spot checks for understanding. Formative assessments should inform the teachers of where they can improve teaching as well as inform students of areas for improvement. On the other hand, summative assessments are more formal, end-of-material assessments to specifically measure the students knowledge.  Summative assessments are heavier in bulk weight than formative assessments, since they are more concrete final grades or can influence grade promotion. Overall, both formative and summative assessments are critical for measuring students' knowledge and informing educators' teaching process.
