We can integrate opportunities to practice using new vocabulary in every subject.

Biggest Takeaway

My biggest takeaway was that ELPS support is not only beneficial for ELLs but every student. Especially students that are below grade level for other reasons.

Biggest Take-Away

I like the fact that the ELPS Linguistic Instructional Alignment Guide is color coded to make it easier for me to find exactly what I am looking for.

Also, TELPAS is used to measure whether or not students have make any progression in English language acquisition. I always thought the TELPAS was only looking fo rmastery of the English language.

ELPS reflections

It is required by the state for ELPS to be  implemented within instruction and even though I am a math and science teacher, I still can incorporate a segment for students to be able to respond verbally while providing content.

It is important to know the proficiency level of my learners and understand how to teach them correctly.

What I learned

I learned that Texas struggled to come up with a good way to evaluate and assess ELs and needed to create a new way of doing that to meet the needs of students without creating a crazy amount of extra work and to meet the requirements of the department of education.

It is important to meet the needs and wants of our ELPS students.

One of my biggest take aways is that it is important to know each proficiency level and understand what they mean and how to teach it so that we can properly instruct our ELL and help them academically succeed.

ELPS Takeaway

I learned that teaching ELLs doesn't have to be teaching them like they would in English class. It is using science language still, but making it relatable.

EL's in the classroom

Students should be provided an opportunity as much as possible to speak, read, and write to ensure that transfer of knowledge so the EL students can take in as much as possible.
