This is always important so you will be able to make sure content in comprehensible for what they need during instruction.

This training always helps to remind us to look at the new students moving up or coming into our schools that need be identified as an ELL. This is always important so you will be able to make sure content in comprehensible for what they need during instruction.

My takeaway..

You might not need to focus on all the ELPS in your lessons, it is important to only focus on the ELPS that are commensurate with your students level in each of the levels domain. This goes on with knowing your students and reading the data needed to best help your students.

ELPS Takeaways

ELPS are required to be integrated into every subject.  All students can benefit from these practices.

Speak in a clear voice.

It is important to ensure my students understand what's being taught. Not only should I speak clearly and check in with them, it would also be beneficial to be able to speak to them in their native language.

Algebra is also a 2nd language (or 3rd) for some students.

My biggest takeaway was that when students are learning the language of Algebra they can benefit from the same strategies that teachers employ to teach students a new language. For example:
(1)
The student must use prior knowledge and experiences to understand meanings in Algebra.
(2) Strategies such as concept mapping, drawing, memorizing, comparing, contrasting, and reviewing are useful to help Algebra students acquire basic and grade-level vocabulary.

Takeaway

It's easy to assume that because I teach math only parts of this will apply to my instruction, but this is incorrect thinking. The teacher strategies are helpful and will benefit more than just ELLs.
