It's very important

A lot of apps that we commonly use can compromise student data without our realizing it.
I need to be careful before just saying "oh!  That's a neat app!" and letting my kids use it.

I should check with IT and/or make sure it is on school's approved apps list before going ahead and using something new

I learned to make sure all apps are vetted by our district before using them in the class setting and to still check on all aspects of the app before allowing for student use.

Student Privacy

I learned that before using an app in the class that I should check out its privacy rating and read into why it was rated that way.

Protect Student Data!

I learned a more in depth definition of student privacy and why it is important in this new digital age of learning. I also learned the three important federal laws, FERPA, COPPA, and PPRA that protects student data from exploitation. I understood student privacy as far as health records, discipline records, academics, and disabilities, but this training reaffirmed that even though we use district approved educational online services, a student's online presence should also be protected.

I gained knowledge of specific guidelines and criteria to use when deciding whether or not to use an app in the classroom.

Student Privacy

I learned that some of the apps I am familiar with have some safety concerns. I learned how they are rated and how I can determine what is best for my students.

With great power, there must also come great responsibility

I already knew that some apps weren't safe. However, I never really thought about how or why apps were deemed safe or not.

So much of privacy depends on legal definitions and consent from the school and the providers

Schools have to be careful to be sure the providers legal definitions of these types of actions and information are correct and acceptable to protect students.
