Equations and Identities

Equations and Identities lesson provides students the concept of a statement being Always True, Sometimes True, or Never True.  Student rarely understand these types of questions.  This is a great first intro a set of problems that ask a student to answer Always, Sometimes, Never.  Students start with a worksheet to assess what they already know.  Teacher then looks over each student set of responses and provides a few targeted questions.  Then students get a set of cards to put in piles of Always, Sometimes, or Never.

Downloaded Lesson

DOWNLOADED LESSON: WHAT’S THE POINT

Description:  this lesson has students analyze a cartoon using different techniques and graphic organizers.  Students are asked to read a non-fiction article to help build their background knowledge to help complete an argumentative writing assignment.  This lesson has many graphic organizers and a rubric to help the students successfully complete the assignment.

Future use:  This will be very helpful in the future to use as a writing lesson.  It goes right along with the standards and is a fun and creative way to teach about not only point of view, but argumentative writing.  This is also helpful because this lesson can then tie into social studies by having students look at the view point of individuals throughout history.  For example the difference between the view point about god from the pharaoh and the Egyptians to Moses and the Jews, or the Romans vs the Christians.

Counting Coins to One Dollar Checklist Measurement and Data, Grade 2

During our PLC, our second grade team identified Money as one of our power standards to address. We researched and collaborated on the effectiveness of this lesson plan, to which we implemented in our classroom. This lesson was scaffolded very well. Students need to identify the value of each coin and comprehend that there are numerous combinations to create a dollar, or other amounts of money. A checklist is a great organization tool to keep track of the different ways to make one dollar. In addition, the utilization of creating an environment to use money, and its many combination, was very effective, especially for English Language Students. Our team created a store to where students' shopped, purchased, and received change.

Area and Perimeter of My College Apartment

This is a great activity for assessing length, width, area and perimeter. The students will use their knowledge of area and perimeter to design their future college apartment. They will be using collaborative skills as they will be working with a partner or "roommate" to complete this activity with the use of a rubric that will be used to grade to assignment. In addition, they will be critiquing and reviewing another group's work and will provide feedback for that group to improve before submitting for a final grade.

This activity directs students to write first hand journal entries in the shoes of survivors and justify their actions.

This will be a powerful assignment for tenth graders.  Journaling about catastrophic events will help students identify survival characteristics and see how such actions could apply in their own lives, thereby building grit and determination. In addition, ranking the survival actions and discussing their decisions in groups forces students to support their decisions with evidence. The unit ends with a final written rationalization where students explain their rankings with concrete support, giving much needed practice in providing evidence for stated opinions.

I watched "Analyze Development of Theme in a Text: Clarifying Intended Learning" because I teach English 9 and 11.

This lesson can help at my grade level because we study many texts that students are not able to find the theme easily.  As they switch from elementary and middle school, the reading becomes more difficult and the themes are often embedded.  This resource shows how teachers can use guided questions to help clarify theme.  Students will understand that theme develops over the course of the text and by using the clarify, elicit, act, and interpret method they will be able to find the theme.

Decimals/Money

After going over the growth mindset focus, I found that many students did not have the positive mindset when it came to math, especially in areas where they struggled in. Teaching an SAI middle school math class can be challenging as there are a variety of disabilities that can feed on one another and can effect the learning environment. Many of my students did not have a concept of money, so what better way to go over decimals/money than to do some shopping? The lesson is broken up into multiple parts and consists of purchasing items at an amusement park (many students can relate). They had a specific budget that they had to stay. Students worked in groups and recorded their item and activity costs. This lesson provided opportunities for students to collaborate and learning from one another. The lesson not only focuses on the concepts of money and decimals but also a life skill.

I watched a video on Marzano strategies. This is a 6 tier concept for learning vocabulary.

Marzano strategies consist of 6 strategies or modalities for acquiring Vocabulary.  The modalities are e
Explain, Restate, Show, Enagage, Discuss and Play.  The strategy can help teachers in my grade level and content area because it provides give teachers ideas and opportunities that allow students to truly master vocab and content.  because students are asked to work with terms in a variety of ways, their depth and perspective of content increases immensely.  Marzano and Bloom would actually be great Homeboys.

Academic Integrity

In today's world of technology and information, both students and teachers are offered an incredible amount of resources.  However, this has also created more opportunities for potential cheating.  Academic Integrity offers a great beginning of the year lesson to teach your students about plagiarism, consequences and academic integrity.  https://learnit.hoonuit.com/5851/learnit
