Decimals/Money

After going over the growth mindset focus, I found that many students did not have the positive mindset when it came to math, especially in areas where they struggled in. Teaching an SAI middle school math class can be challenging as there are a variety of disabilities that can feed on one another and can effect the learning environment. Many of my students did not have a concept of money, so what better way to go over decimals/money than to do some shopping? The lesson is broken up into multiple parts and consists of purchasing items at an amusement park (many students can relate). They had a specific budget that they had to stay. Students worked in groups and recorded their item and activity costs. This lesson provided opportunities for students to collaborate and learning from one another. The lesson not only focuses on the concepts of money and decimals but also a life skill.
