Resume

The most relevant topic Melanie Adams discussed dealt with professionalism. I will be the first to admit that I am not the most intimidating person, nor do I put off an air of authority. She discussed the reality that the way we present ourself (basically how we dress) will help gain the respect of the students and their families. I will use this in my classroom so I maintain the boundary of personal and professional and gain the respect of the students in a nonthreatening way.

This online workshop was really interesting because I had never thought about global collaboration in my classroom. As an English education pre-service teacher, I think there is a lot of room for doing this with writing practices and other similar elements that I will be using that I can implement in the work I am going to do with my students in the future.

Reflection

This is relevant to my future classroom because without having an appropriate resume and cover letter, I will not get the job in the first place. Also, even if my resume and cover letter are appropriate and get me an interview, without having the appropriate dress, I might not get the job also. I can then bring in my professional dress into my classroom and serve as a good model as my students for their potential future job.

Overall, I thought the workshop was very helpful and I would love to implement pieces of information into my classroom. I think the three day educational conference that was put on via online was such a great idea. This allows anyone to attend and learn. The session I attended was through a downloaded program called DropIn, I liked the idea of this program but the sound was difficult to hear at times so I would suggest using a program with a better sound quality.

This webinar made me realize what women go through everyday and how they face harassment in the workplace

I learned about both subtle and overt ways in which women are harassed in the workplace. This webinar was helpful to me because it made me more aware of how actions and words can be interpretated in a different way by different genders and to be careful with what we say.

I think that this is a great idea for teachers to get students to be more active in the community. As teachers, we can help our students get interested in the community around them, which is a great value to instill in them. By teaching what they can do to help the world, we've giving them some very important tools that will develop them into better citizens. I think that while this exact program many not work for every school, there will always be some kind of opportunity for students to get involved and volunteer.

Differentiated Reading Instruction Webinar Reflection

This webinar was useful because I want to teach 2nd grade and reading is such an integral part of that grade level. This webinar taught me useful tips that I want to incorporate in my future classroom such as reading buddies, interest surveys, and formative assessments. I've participated in some of Dr. Monica Burns webinars before and I really enjoy what she has to say and educational technology and curriculum!

In this webinar, I learned all about how to teach digital literacy to my future students. I learned strategies for teaching them to understand real news versus fake news. I learned all about teaching them how to speak up when they encounter online bullying or something inappropriate. There are steps that teachers can take to help students get on track to understanding that there can be a lot of disinformation and misinformation online. You have to be able to think critically and analyze what you are seeing/reading to be able to decide if it is accurate and reliable information or not. There is a framework for teaching digital literacy with 7 essential skills that students should have. These would be beneficial to teach, especially in an upper elementary or secondary school setting. I would teach a more simple version to younger children (I am early childhood ed), but I would definitely still teach these things because children are online at young ages and it would be a good idea to have these things already ingrained in them from an early age.

Webinar reflection

I sort of already discussed this is my summary, however I will discuss it again! I found this webinar to be the most useful because it gave me great ideas for how to create a teacher library (with little to no money) and how to incorporate literature into the classroom, in order to hit the ISTE standards. I appreciated the most, that Dr.Cullen discussed how to incorporate cyber bullying education into a secondary class. I often feel like it can be difficult to discuss bullying with students because you never know what someone is going through. However, Dr.Cullen showed several young adult book suggestions for high school kids that touch on cyber bullying in a very real way. And since I feel like personal experience is the best way to make a connection to something, I appreciated these book suggestions. I also loved that Dr.Cullen discussed the barbie book ("Barbie is a Computer Engineer") because it seemed to be a happy and positive book for young girls, however after consideration is was very sexist and I wold not want any young girl reading it. AND IT WAS PUBLISHED IN 2015. I just couldn't believe that such  sexist book made it to publishing so recently. I think I appreciated that the most from the webinar, that sexism/bullying/racism is still very prevalent and it must never be ignored.

This is very relevant to my future classroom to continue to spark their interests and curiosities. This webinar helped me think of ways to keep learning fun and interesting. I would really like to read Monica Burn's book at some point because she is full of good tips and tricks in the classroom. I didn't realize that there was a difference between lessons and units until now. The 3 C's will be very helpful throughout my time as a teacher in the future.

This concept about racism and learning from Anne Frank’s experience can be applied to the classroom. Many children go through certain circumstances at home, and I want them to know that my class is a safe place where they can discuss their thoughts and opinions. Racism is a huge issue and still affects the world today. Children need to be aware of the issue and how they can improve unity throughout humans. Viewing each other as equals and not dominating one another’s culture is a crucial topic that students need to be aware of growing up.

Relevance to future classroom

The books presented in the webinar will be utilized greatly whenever introducing certain new technology concepts. My main goal as a teacher when using technology is to help my students understand that technology is not a bad thing, but we should be educated on how to use it and use it right. I want my students to enjoy technology while also still enjoying old fashioned methods of educational progress. I think that these books will help me introduce technological concepts and help my students see more real life occurrences of how useful technology can be.
