My Reflection

In the beginning of the webinar I was worried that it wouldn't apply to me because she had two elementary majors helping her and began with discussing elementary level books. However, I stuck with it and was happy to hear her include the secondary majors in the group. Because I was driving home from work during that webinar, I had to use my phone and call in. It was a different experience from a typical webinar but I appreciated the different way of participating. In the end, I'm glad I sat in for the webinar.

Reflection

Since I am a Social Studies major, I probably will not be using the physics based project in my classroom. The second project that we worked on, I could possibly find a way to use. The theme of that project was that our world was being destroyed and we had to find a new planet to live on. They created three new "planets" for us to choose from after a series of missions where a little more of each planet was revealed to us during each mission. In the end, we had to decide which new planet we wanted to inhabit and provide rationale as well as a presentation for where we chose. I could certainly use the theme of the world coming to an end to generate a lot of discussion about the problems we see with the world today and the things we could do about it. I could also use this project to show Geography and what resources and land forms are necessary when it comes to the creation and continuation of civilization.

overview

I thought the Webinar was pretty cool. I liked that I could either mute myself and just listen, or unmet my self and ask questions and participate directly. I thought it was an easy way to learn new skills and broaden teaching knowledge. I also liked the topic of how to teach technology without actually having technology. This will be the case in many schools, and now we know how to still incorporate it, without actually having it.

I really enjoyed this workshop because I learned a lot more about iMovie, and learned how user friendly it is. We were given 30 minutes to make a video with a group, which I thought would be impossible, but we were able to easily make one and it turned out great. I am excited to be able to use this as a teacher because it is something that I already feel comfortable with. I would also feel comfortable letting my students use it, because I am confident I could help them if they needed assistance.

As an early childhood major I personally find this work shop extremely beneficial. I could use this app to easily help explain life cycles, the water cycle, retell a story, etc. In addition students could use the app to create a fun reselling of a story, or a creative expression assignment. I personally plan to now use this app in my future classroom.

Future classroom

Unfortunately, suspension is still a thing even with early childhood education.  Therefore, like I said before, I would want to go over agreed upon consequences with my students and even with myself.  This way if a student does something, we both know what to do and there is not any possible bias.  A typical problem the webinar discussed is a teacher being more relaxed if a student they loved did something but is more harsh with the "trouble maker" did it when in reality, both students have done the same thing.  With an agreed upon consequence and clear rules, this would not be an issue. Plus, I want to avoid suspension at all cost for my future classroom.  It is not beneficial for the kids, but instead, makes them miss important class time and possibly get them into even more trouble.

I can use this in my future classroom in many ways. First, I can use it to do sight words or emphasize grammar. I can also use it to retell a story or have my students retell a story. I could use it during science to show weather, seasons, or even life and water cycles. This will make learning more fun in my class.

Reflection

As a future English Language Arts educator, literature is incredibly important. Choosing a children's book or a YA book is a huge decision in terms of what each may connote to my students. When I was in middle school, for example, my teacher used children's books to present a simple metaphor which, as Dr. Cullen suggested, allowed us to brainstorm things to write about. In turn, we could create our own stories using Book Creator or other apps like it.

Interactive

Having books about technology is a great interactive way to get students involved in technology even if they do not have access to technology. Students love to read and love when teachers read them books and if a teacher could use literature to show the affect technology can have on a student they would be able to relate and connect to the topic on a whole new level.

Reflection of Attendance

Some of the books that stood out to me include "Girl Code," "If You Give A Mouse an iPhone," and "Goodnight iPad." As a teacher, I would use the information I learned as a way to teach my students how to be a part of the digital community. Students are surrounded by technology in today's world, so they need to know how to be responsible with it.

Applying Nearpod

I think Nearpod could be a great addition to the classroom when I have students do investigations. My hope is to push towards a discovery based learning approach in my future classroom. I think this would give more students ownership of their learning. I think using Nearpod would be a great way to have all students participate in discussion and share ideas.

Chemistry and planets to math...

As far as content goes, I'm having difficulty seeing applications for the math classroom. We could maybe talk about percentages of gases in the atmosphere, but there would be a lot of time taken by all the other activities. Maybe having this be an integrated chemistry and math lesson could result in students building their own planet by balancing equations and finding out how much of each element they would put in their planet.
I did like using HaikuDeck, because it kept slides really simple and it was easy and quick for us to display our most important points. This would be good for students to decide what information was most important to share with the class.
