SAMR Summary

SAMR Summary
SAMR is a framework through which you can assess and evaluate the technology you use in your class. For example, in a substitution level, teachers or students are only using new technology tools to replace old ones. In Augmentation teachers or students are using the functions but with extras (like auto save). Modification is where technology is being used more effectively and Redefinition is where we utilize technology as an integral part of the day to day learning.

SAMR is a ladder

Augmentation and substitution may make a classroom more efficient, but you will not see real gains in learning until you really redefine and redesign the task. The SAMR video included sharing student work widely in both of the top tiers as a way to modify the assignment. Students who are more engaged and involved in the task learn more.

SAMR Level 1

SAMR Level 1Robynn DrerupThe video presents the 4 levels of SAMR which are Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition.  It explains that substitution is just simply instead of writing it paper/pencil, you keep the same assignment and substitute it with the computer.  If you are reaching the augmentation level, you keep the same assignment but now you have the student do it on google docs so that you can comment/share with each other.  Modification and redefinition takes student learning to a new level that was not even possible a few years ago. The initial assignment is changed so that more learning and ownership can take place.  It is REAL learning that becomes ALIVE by the students being engaged and excited about their tasks. Obviously as teachers, we need to strive to have our students working at the modification and redefinition levels as often as we can so that they are using those higher level thinking skills and are able to share them with the world at just one click~

SAMR Model

SAMR is designed to infuse technology into classroom lessons.  Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition are the four areas.  Within those areas, there is Enhancement focusing on Substitution and Augmentation and Transformation focusing on Modification and Redefinition.  When teaching sometimes it make sense to just substitute, for example, taking a paper/pencil to a Google Slide journal.  Sometimes the lesson you are teaching needs completing redefined.  Instead of writing a research paper, you are creating a video game, that uses speech bubbles to tell the facts, and you share your video game with the world.

SAMR is a way of thinking about changing learning/instruction by using technology to transform what modern learning looks like.

SAMR is a way of thinking about changing learning/instruction by using technology to transform what modern learning looks like. At the most basic level, teachers simply substitute (S) a technological assignment for one that was previously done on paper and pencil. For example, they might have students type an essay rather than handwrite it. The next level is augmentation (A). This is when the teacher slightly modifies the original assignment to include aspects that technology makes easier. The third level is modification (M). At this level, the teacher changes the assignment in a big way, due to technology allowing for a big modification. The final level is redefinition (R). At this step, the teacher completely rethinks the design of the assignment. They have the students create or do something that would have been inconceivable before current technology.

Summary of SAMR

SAMR model was created by Dr. Ruben Puentedura and was based off of Bloom’s Taxonomy. The 4 levels are substitution, modification, augmentation and redefinition. Substitution is where you substitute a basic level assignment and substitute technology for, per say, a paper-pencil assignment. Augmentation is similar but provides an improvement to enhance the lesson. Modification is where learning begins to take place as an assignment’s outcome is different and is collaborative with a world audience. Redefinition allows for creative tasks that reflect their learning. The original task is significantly changed so that the learner is engaged and provides a more global audience as well. The goal is to use the technology as a tool that empowers the learner to use creative tools to take charge of their learning.

SAMR Level 1

This video did a nice job of explaining the 4 levels of using technology and taking a task and transforming it.  This allows for students to reach a global authentic audience.  The four levels are...Substitution-tech acts as a direct substitute with no functional change.  Augmentation-direct substitute with functional improvement. Modification-allows for task redesign. Redefinition-allows for creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable.   Teachers should keep in mind What, Why, and How when using technology to make it worthwhile for students...don't just use technology because you can.

I watched to video on SAMR.

The SAMR video presented 4 levels that educators can use technology.  The 4 levels are:  substitution, augmentation, modification, and redefinition.  The levels move a students from simply substituting technology for another method.  An example would be that a student would use a computer to write an essay instead of using paper and pencil.  The next method substitutes technology with the intention to improve by using technology.    The last two levels basically allow the educator give students the opportunity to create things that were not feasible years ago.  The last two levels also allows students to take their learning global.

Information about SAMR video

The video discusses the four levels of SAMR. The S, substitution, is when technology is used to take the place of another way to do the same task. For example, a student can use a pencil and paper to write a paragraph or use a computer to type the paragraph. The A, augmentation, takes substitution a step further by improving the task. A student could type a paragraph in Google Docs and collaborate with others on the same task. Substitution and augmentation are enhancements. Technology simply enhances the task. The next two areas transform the task into something that is impossible without technology. The M, modification, redefines the task into something different and impossible without technology. Students could type the paragraph, embed videos, and publish it online. They could even start a blog. Lastly, the R, redefine, changes the task completely. Instead of typing a paragraph, the students could create a digital story and share it with people all over the world. The audience is larger than the classroom. Substitution, augmentation, modification, and redefinition are the four levels of SAMR.

The SAMR Model has 4 levels: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition.

The SAMR Model is similar to Blooms Taxonomy, geared towards educators. The SAMR model has 4 levels. The first level is Substitution. The second is Augmentation. Both of these levels fall under Enhancement, which means it’s more efficient, but unlikely to make a difference in future outcomes. Most learning takes place in Modification and Redefinition. Both of these levels fall under Transformation. Maximizing student success is the ultimate outcome.

The SAMR Model

The SAMR model is a way of using technology for student learning. There are 4 levels: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, & Redefinition. Substitution is merely substituting the finished product from paper/pencil to on technology. Augmentation allows for some collaborative work within the lesson. These two levels do not really allow for new or different learning to take place. The next two levels allow for more creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. In the Modification level, students create with pictures, text, and web links. Their work is made public for all the world to see and comment. Redefinition allows for the students to literally redefine their work. They are given the opportunity to think outside of the box at the highest level to create something that was inconceivable just a few years ago.  I love this model - It's a great tool for a teacher to self-monitor their students learning!
