Formative assessments are used to improve/inform instruction. These could be quick checks for understanding using visual cues (thumbs up/thumbs down, etc.) or a pop quiz at the start of class. It could also be in the form of an exit ticket.

Summative assessments are used at the end of a topic/unit/semester/course to check for competency in the standards. These can be in form of end-of-unit tests or more formal assessments such as IREAD and ILEARN.
