A formative assessment is an informal assessment that is used to monitor student learning throughout a lesson/unit. These assessments are used to check student comprehension, provide feedback on areas of strength and improvements to students, and to help educators alter and improve lessons. This assessment is generally low stakes and can be as simple as an exit slip.

A summative assessment is meant to evaluate student learning at the completion of a unit and is a high stakes assessment as it is generally measured against a standard or benchmark. These assessments can include tests, projects papers etc.
