Formative assessments are used continuously throughout the lesson building process. Teachers give low stakes accountability tasks such as a Google Classroom question, a few second video response or a submission of a pre graded idea. These tasks are used to analyze the students' understanding up to that point in the lesson.  The teacher uses the information to decide the next step of instruction. The teacher answers questions such as, do the students need more information over an important competency or do they need more practice with the skill.  The students can use the formative assessment to compare where they should be within a certain learning range. Formative assessments are ongoing and should be used as check points within a lesson.

Summative assessments are used to measure a students competency at the end of a unit or large lesson.  Teachers can give a standard test or a project to complete this assessment. Summative assessments are high stakes and are usually a substantial percentage of a term's grade.  These acknowledge that the student has completed an acceptable understanding of the overall expected materials.  They serve as benchmarks for further progress onto another level.
