A New York Times Bestseller that is practical and useful!

I was searching for educational books that contain self-improvement guidance that people of all ages could benefit from. I found this book, a New York Times Bestseller, and read the summary. It looked like something I would enjoy and also benefit from. It also looked like it might have some good advice for people of all ages- my students, my children, family, and friends.

Why I chose this book..

I chose this book because I am very interested in the Science of Reading and how it applies to my grade level band. I am looking for insight on how to provide background knowledge to my classes and to increase their reading comprehension.

I chose The Writing Revolution for my independent book study to hold myself accountable for finishing the book.

I chose The Writing Revolution for my independent book study because I've had a copy of the book for a couple of years and I've only managed to get through the first chapter. The book has been highly recommended, and I've implemented the strategies for sentence writing, but that's as far as I've gotten. Something always seems to come up. If I sign up for the book study then I'll hold myself accountable to complete the book.

Deeper Dive

I deal a lot with struggling readers in the intermediate grades and I was looking for a book that would help me go beyond teaching to decode.  I took a course recently that touched on reading comprehension but I wanted to delve deeper.  After a bit of research, the same book kept coming up:  Reading Power, by Adrienne Gear.  When I saw the rave reviews that it received, and that it was inspired by the book Strategies that Work:  Teaching Comprehension to Enhance Understanding, by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis, I thought I would give it a try.  By reading this book I hope to gain additional strategies and a better understanding of how to help my students improve their reading abilities.

Reading Comprehension

Ms. Cissi cleaned out some of her classroom and she gave me a set of these, one about reading and the other about writing. I have been so impressed with my current Sophomore's writing ability and their knowledge and understanding of texts when we discuss them together. However, they have not done well on cold reads, so I want to get some new ideas for enhancing reading in my classroom to recoup some of the reading time they likely lost while they were young during COVID-19.

Building self-esteem and confidence in our teens.

I chose this book because it is supposed to give simple mindful practices for teenagers to help them reduce stress and build self-esteem. I thought this would be a good book to read to help my students build confidence and help them reduce their anxiety.

I chose this book in order to gain a more holistic and sustainable approach to classroom management.

I chose this book because I am looking for more research-based, sustainable classroom management strategies that will foster a positive and safe classroom environment for all students.  I want to move beyond the reward/punishment "norm" of classroom management and delve more into how the brain works, and apply that information in the classroom, so it can benefit teachers and students.

I have seen a lot of talk about this book currently

I chose this book because I have seen a lot of talk about it lately with friends and colleques reading it along with the NH library having an open book discussion with parents and teachers to discuss this book.
I am hoping that after reading it I can find things in the book that I can use to not only help my students but my own three children who are at the age of having electronics and wanting to be on them often.

It came highly-recommended.

I selected Mindset The New Psychology of Success because I have been interested in learning more about the growth mindset for years. I see students struggle with content and I want to be able to instill some more growth mindset into their thinking. I think grit in education is important. It's not always book smarts, sometimes it's the willingness to work for it.

Why I chose this book?

I honestly chose this book because my colleague stated how great the book was. Plus, the title Limitless Mind was intriguing. Is there truly no end to what we can learn?

7 Mighty Moves was a book that was recommended by one of the TRL trainers last year. Each chapter tackles a different TRL strategy.

Why?

I heard about this from a boys varsity soccer coach and how he used it to motivate his team.  I also saw a video clip of Admiral McRaven's graduation speech and then saw he wrote a book about it at Barnes and Noble and just had to read it.  I also love that it's a quick but meaningful read.
