Is the Hydrologic Cycle Sustainable? A Historical-Geographical Critique of a Modern Concept by: Jamie Linton

This is an interesting article that talks about the history of hydrology, how the realization of the water cycle didn't come about until the 17th century.  It then describes how water has become a human commodity and that our heavy use of it has disrupted its natural cycle.  The name of the article then comes into play as it analyzes the reasons why the cycle is being impeded (but not fully).  This is largely due to the "Blue Water Bias" of humans using technology to create reservoirs of water for practical as well as recreational use, which heavily disrupts the cycle.  Also, less water is in the soil as it has been in the past, which is important phase in the cycle that a portion of water goes through.

Pollution

Article chosen: https://www.sciencedaily.com/terms/pollution.htm

After reading this article, I cannot believe how there are people who think global warming is a hoax. Fairly recently, Fresno was ranked number one on California's pollution list. In the article, the scholar stated that motor vehicles are the most common air pollutants. These pollutants such as carbon dioxide emissions cause many adverse health effects. If these pollutants are not controlled, they can cause cancer and other leading diseases or even death. This scholar does an excellent job in discussing some of the leading causes of air pollution. To address the opposing side, the scholar addressed that air pollution could also be caused by natural disasters. However, due to these pollutants are in the environment, causes such as motor vehicles are still to blame.

Water Pollution and Treatment Technologies D. Harikishore Kumar Reddy* and S.M. Lee

Water is a source of life and regarded as the most essential of natural resources. Water covers most of our; however, approximately 98% of this water is seawater and is unusable for drinking because of the high concentration of salt. The advanced treatment processes are very effective at eliminating most unwanted pathogens and many chemicals . In recent years, the semiconductor photo catalytic process, a low-cost, environmental friendly and sustainable treatment technology to align with the “zero” waste scheme in the water/wastewater industry has been widely studied.there is an urgent need to create awareness for pressing environmental problems and to develop solutions in close cooperation between science, governments, industry, and other relevant stakeholders.

This article talked about the exchange processes between rivers and groundwater. Groundwater is affected by human activity. When water flows from rivers and goes into the ground, the layers of dirt filter the water. Bacteria and micro-organisms can still reach the water that we have. The flow of water and amount of bacteria in the water can affect how much can enter water.

The scholarly article that I chose to read was "Sinking and Floating 3rd grade" It is written by Iionica Hardy

An article that is science related and that I found interesting is “Sinking and Floating”. It talked about the misconception of younger students thinking that boats sink because of their weight. So, if an item weighed more it is more likely to sink than an item that weighs less. I found this particularly interesting because it is easy to believe this because as young children this is what most likely makes sense. This article also opens the window as a future teacher to see how I can tackle misconceptions that come with science.

This article was about the water cycle also known as the hydrologic cycle. The water cycle shows the process from which the water makes its way through the earths surface and through the atmosphere. The water cycle is important to understand because there are many other things that go into it such as photo synthesis. Water is an important sources and is needed for almost everything.

In this article, it talked about the pyramid of Biomass. It shared the definition and representation of the layers. As defined in this article, "the pyramid of biomass is a graphical representation that depicts the biomass existent in per unit area in all the different trophic levels of the ecological system. The bottom level of this pyramid is occupied by producer, and the top of the pyramid is occupied by the carnivores." This article basically tells you in detail what is a biomass pyramid and why do we have it and why the areas are at where they're at. It mentioned how the biomass pyramid can help you determine the food chain that occurs in the environment.

Nasa Links port-city sea levels to regional ice melt.

Nasa has a new tool that can calculate the increase in sea level rise in port cities across the globe. The tool is able to directly attribute the rising sea levels at each port to the nearest melting glaciers. For example, Sydney Australia is seeing a rapid increase in sea level due to melting ice from Antarctica. The tool and measurements are designed to help people living and working in these port cities devise plans of action for the continuing sea level rises.

Air pollution is becoming  huge problem and is affecting millions or people throughout the world. The World Heath Organization has claimed it to be so bad that the estimate 2.4 million people will die for health issues brought on by air pollution. This article states that air pollution affects the people health including their respiratory system and lung disease. It also expresses that reducing the air pollution can benefit everyone and the environment. The government needs to take action to reduce the pollutions in the air.

Starving polar bear photographer explains why she couldn't help. National Geographic

I read this article on polar bears and climate change. This photographer named Christina Mermeir explained what she felt about taking pictures for a starving polar bear. This was really sad, I did not realize how bad climate change has affected the ways pilot bears hunt. Polar bears need platforms of sea ice to be able to hunt their prey but most of the year the ice is melted and they stay stranded on land starving. Climate change are affecting these animals.

http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0179151 The journal article talks about runoffs in urban areas.

Agriculture pollutants like pesticides are carried by streams into the ocean.  Urban areas also contribute to run off pollutions because rooftops and streets quicken the water movement towards bodies of water, not allowing them to soak into the soil. Most studies of run off's are conducted for Forrest in agriculture and urban areas. Urban areas are known for a quote for Mona Jim' most studies of run off's are conducted for Forrest and agriculture and urban areas. Urban areas are known for "homogeneous within the watershed"
