Why Bee Extinction Would Mean the End of Humanity

In this article, it describes why the extinction of bees could mean the extinction of humans. This article describes how important bees really are to human life and how we rely on them more than we realize. For example, out of the crops that are used for food, 70% of them are pollinated by bees. They are responsible for the reproduction of crops, because they transfer pollen from male to female plants. This article states, that although there are other bugs such as butterflies that pollinate, and wind helps pollinate, these are slower and not as efficient as bees. Not only would humans be effected by the extinction of bees, so would animals. Herbivores rely on plants to survive. Such as cows, with a decrease in plants without bees, there would be a decrease in milk and meat production. Another example of how humans would be effected is the production of Canola. Canola is made possible through the pollination of bees. Canola serves as fuel and cooking oil. Overall, I think this article was a great source for explaining the importance of bees. Extinction, crop production, and herbivores were all topics in our course and they were in this article as well. I think this would be a great article for students to read about bees because it is an easy read.

Summary on How Melting ice is contributing to the rise in Diversity in the Artic.

In the Article I read by University of Southern Denmark it was describing the increased diversity near the larger melting ponds in the Artic caused by the increased climate. These melting ponds that form on the top of glaciers accumulate algae and other organisms that then fall into the water. When they fall into the water it is immediately ingested by the creatures living near the top like krill. Whatever is left float to the bottom and becomes food for bottom feeders. As we had learned in our book that with a higher availability of food the more diverse an area becomes. As in this article the rise in melting ponds is what is contributing to the larger numbers of sea life in the area. (University of Southern Denmark. A short summary of the water cycle.

In this article we learn about the water cycle and the changes in the global mean seal level. The article first starts off by talking about the water cycle itself and how how cycle describes the process of water as water molecules making their way through the Earth and into the atmosphere. We also learn about the different steps of the cycle; evaporation, transportation, and sublimation, and emission. One of the cool things I liked was the amount of water we have in our atmosphere is about 12,900 cubic kilometers.
When it comes to the oceans, not only are they being filled constantly but by huge amounts. The seas have shown that over the past few years they have been replenished with great amounts of water, and there is a huge increase in the past 100 years. When it comes to sea level they have increased because of the oceans warming which causes the water to expand and increase at levels. One of the main increases is the fact that the snow caps and land ice has been melting causing the water levels to rise. (NASA)
