Formative assessments are used throughout a lesson to improve instruction which is based off of student's feedback. Students can use formative assessments to see where they may need extra help before the end of a lesson. For teachers, formative assessments are great to see where they may need to reteach a topic. Formative assessments may be seen in the classroom as rough drafts, concept maps, or exit tickets.

Summative assessments are given at the end of a lesson to measure the student's understanding. Summative assessment help measure grade-level goals. For teachers, summative assessments are great to monitor grade level promotion. These assessments are often graded. Summative assessments may been seen in the classroom as final exams, papers, and projects.
