Formative Assessment: Assessments throughout a unit or class that allow the teacher can gauge a student’s learning.  These assessments allow teachers to adjust their teaching to help students learn better, or see what students might need extra help.
Summative Assessment: Assessments at the end of a unit or a class, which determine how much a student has learned.  These are the final grades, that determine how much a student has learned on a subject after all the learning is done, and only inform decisions related to grade placement.
