Formative assessments help the teacher monitor student
learning. They provide the teacher immediate feedback that teachers can use to
adjust their delivery of a lesson or make other improvements to their teaching
and/or curriculum. They also help students know what their strengths and
weaknesses are.
Summative assessments help the teacher evaluate student learning at the end of a unit or lesson. They are compared against a standard, and usually carry a high point value such as a midterm exam or final. Results are usually used to make adjustments in subsequent courses.
