PaTTAN Harrisburg - 12/5/18 Patty Graner & Diane Gillam

Today we learned about the concept comparison routine.  The device in this routine can be utilized to introduce a concept or as a review of a concept.  It is important to consider when to utilize this device.  Some considerations are for concepts that are abstract, difficult to understand, and help prepare students for mastering information.

12/5/18 Concept Comparison

Within the concept comparison routine, teachers lead students through the process of comparing 2 or more critical concepts. The teacher uses the comparison table to support students in identifying characteristics of each concept, how the concepts are similar and dissimilar, as well as comparing categories of the concepts and ultimately summarizing the information in a succinct manner.

Content Enhancement Training

I attended Content Enhancement Training with Patty and Diane on 12/5/18.  I found that completing a comparison table needs to be well thought our prior to trying with students.  We often had to go back and rethink our characteristics and categories in order to clarify the overall concept.  This is a strategy that I would possibly use at the beginning of a unit of study.  It is not an activity to be used daily as it takes a significant chunk of time.

This device is such a useful tool to expand knowledge of 2 topics.  I have always loved comparing and contrasting and this one helps expand on that and creates a wonderful study guide for kids or presentation organizer for me.
