7/20 coteaching conference with Helen Barrier

Today I work on a comparison table for my Pre-Algebra math 8 class.  I did a table with my teammates on the topic of quadrilaterals.  We used 5 different quadrilaterals and look at the definitions and similarities and differences.  I am excited to use this in the classroom.

Session held 7/20/18

I think the concept comparison routine will be very helpful in my classroom--both with my 9th grade co-taught World Geography students as well as my 12th grade AP Government students. I plan to use  the routine to help clarify the comparison of difficult concepts and to help with pre writing for comparison essays.

Reflection

Today, we worked individually and in groups to learn about the concept comparison strategy.  We used a government concept to compare and contrast direct democracy and representative democracy.  Then, we evaluated other groups that used math and ELA concepts.  We learned a lot and resolved to implement this with our students this year.

The Concept Comparison Routine device is useful tool for teachers who are unpacking their content prior to introducing topics appropriate for comparing concepts in order to better guide their students through the processing necessary to demonstrate full comprehension across content areas.  The drafting process is particularly helpful in order to avoid confusion for students during initial instruction.  The student product provides a predictable structure for reviewing and extending learning.
