Monitors Impact of Professional Learning Provided

Since working at T/TAC, I have been proficient in multiple professional developments for educators on how to utilize all components of SIM™.  A copy of the professional development I have helped lead in both Learning Strategies Curriculum and Content Enhancement Routines with other colleagues is in the Excel file linked at the bottom of this document.   Additionally, we have had long-term commitments with most sites, where we were available for shoulder to shoulder coaching to help monitor impact with what they had received professional development in.  In addition to coaching teachers, we utilized teacher leadership teams and met with them to help with sustainability once our commitment had been completed.  A sample copy of the agenda we utilized at every teacher leader meeting has been provided in the link below.  Sometimes coaching visits were canceled due to holidays, snow days, and/or testing days.  We made every attempt to reschedule, but not possible at all sites.  A sample copy of coaching dates for a middle school has been provided in an Excel format.  Furthermore, we utilized the implementation checklists for Content Enhancement Routines and strategy checklists for specific Learning Strategies to visit in classrooms while providing instruction, and we would work with administrators on their use of the checklists when conducting walk throughs.  We helped monitor student impact by meeting with teachers during their planning periods and providing feedback with their management charts and student folders they would bring to the meeting.  Finally, we created teacher surveys and student surveys to monitor impact with any Content Enhancement Routines and/or Learning Strategies implemented.  We gathered this information and shared it with the teacher leadership team, which in return, helped to developed the upcoming school year’s action plan.

Experienced with SIM™

I have been working with the Strategic Instruction Model™ (SIM™) since 2004.  I worked for Botetourt County School System during this time, and we were one of the initial sites chosen for the Content Literacy Continuum™(CLC™).   As a chosen CLC site, we implemented the 5 levels of CLC school-wide and within these levels we utilized SIM Learning Strategies and Content Enhancement Routines.  During this time of implementation, I witnessed student gains that both CLC and SIM provided, and I decided to become a professional developer for the Learning Strategies Curriculum.  I received my certification, and I then transferred to work for the Virginia Department of Education T/TAC at Virginia Tech. T/TAC at Virginia Tech allowed me to continue to work with SIM in multiple school divisions in Regions 6 and 7 of Virginia.  It is here where I have continued to grow with SIM, and I decided to become dually certified and obtained my certification in Content Enhancement Routines.  My position with the Virginia Department of Education T/TAC at Virginia Tech for the past 8 years is Coordinator/SIM Professional Developer.  Part of my responsibilities here are to maintain and utilize my SIM certification in both Learning Strategies Curriculum and Content Enhancement Routines, which in return has provided me the opportunity to understand and implement the Strategic Instruction Model school-wide.

Additionally, we have had long-term commitments with most sites, where we were available for shoulder to shoulder coaching with what they received professional development in.  In addition to coaching teachers, we utilized teacher leadership teams and met with them to help with sustainability once our commitment had been completed.  Sometimes coaching visits were canceled due to holidays, snow days, and/or testing days.  We made every attempt to reschedule, but not possible at all sites.  A sample copy of coaching dates for a middle school has been provided in an Excel format.

I have been mentoring Erinn Green who is currently working for the Virginia Department of Education T/TAC @ Virginia Commonwealth University.  She is finishing up her apprentice year, and she is currently loading her documentation into the badging system to become a certified professional developer in Content Enhancement Routines.  I have included documents and a picture of my mentorship with her within the link provided below.  I have also worked with multiple apprentices to help with year 2 of apprenticeship in both Content Enhancement Routines and Learning Strategies Curriculum.   I provided them presentations they could use and tweak to make their own, offered and provided feedback with documents used during professional development, as well as assisted them with answering their required questions for their portfolio.

In addition to, I have worked with colleagues in my office to utilize Possible Selves within our office and within some of our sites.  We used this within our office to help us work as a team with all of the different SIM™ sites we were overseeing.  A copy of the tree picture we developed as colleagues is listed below.  It was the beginning to our monthly meetings that we called SIM Meeting of the Minds.  We are all certified professional developers, and it helped to brainstorm and expand any obstacles or ideas we were discussing with each of the sites we were providing coaching too.  We then proceeded to use this idea and expanded Possible Selves to our sites and called them Possible Schools

Commitment to Serve

My position with the Virginia Department of Education T/TAC at Virginia Tech for the past 8 years is Coordinator/SIM™ Professional Developer.  I am to provide technical assistance to schools, so students with disabilities have access and are successful with the general education curriculum in support of obtaining a diploma for graduation purposes, as well as positive post-secondary outcomes.  In this position, I am also responsible for maintaining and utilizing my SIM certification in both Learning Strategies Curriculum and Content Enhancement Routines in the Superintendent’s Regions 6 & 7 of Virginia.  Furthermore, I have traveled outside of regions 6 & 7 to provide professional development in additional regions of Virginia.  I have not been given the chance to provide professional development outside of the state of Virginia, but if given this opportunity, I am willing to travel.

As stated above, my current position allows for time devoted to SIM™.  If I were granted the role of Professional Development Leader, my position would support this as well.  We held our first PPDI in our office June 22-26, 2015.  This was extremely successful, and we were supported for this event via the VDOE and our Director of T/TAC @ VT, Patty Bickley.  I will also be assisting on Day 5 with PPDI 2016 at the JMU Academy.  Additionally, my current position provides the monetary support of being able to maintain my certifications at least once every two years, if not every year depending on our budget for that particular year.  I have attended the International SIM Conference held in July for the following years:  2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, and I will be attending this year 2016.  I attended a virtual update in 2014.

My colleagues and I routinely submit post professional development records.  When we were initially providing professional development, participants completed a paper copy of this form, and we mailed them to CRL.  We now have the ability to record participants online now, which has made this much more efficient.  We are consistent with our record keeping.

Willingness to Collaborate

Participation in VA SIM Network:
I participate in quarterly Virginia SIM network meetings and book studies with fellow SIM professional developers.

Mentoring Apprentices:
Immediately upon my certification in LS, I mentored someone in LS. Several years later after earning dual certification in CER, I mentored two more individuals. As of January 2016, I have mentored eight individuals for CER and eight individuals for LS, some of whom are still working on their certification.

Contributions to SIM List Serve:

When possible, I regularly respond to questions posed on the SIM List Serve. I also share LS and CER Power Points and agenda with fellow SIM professional developers upon request. Also, many years ago, one of my ideas for singing about helping verbs was published in the KUCRL Strategram.
Here is an example of a SIM List Serve post from April 2015 in response to a question about distance coaching:
I participated in a webinar hosted by the Teaching Channel a year ago about an app that they’ve developed for uploading videos that have the capability of annotating the video while watching it. The demonstration of this feature looked so promising because the coach and teacher can pose questions and write feedback at specific minute marks within the video. At the time, the app cost was $50 per teacher. The videos are on a private channel of the Teaching Channel. Jim Knight and some instructional coaches presented this webinar about how they were using this app with their schools. I would love to try an online video coaching approach with this feature! Our office recently purchased a swivel device that we’ll be trying out soon.Thank you, Jocelyn

Content Literacy Continuum Knowledge

For six years, I coordinated the CLC initiative at two schools in Culpeper, Virginia. My efforts included building a plan for sustaining the initiative by working closely with central office staff and building leadership as well as instructional coaching for teachers on SIM. During this time, I presented CLC overviews for parents, teachers, students, administrators, and the school board. I also collaborated with stakeholders in building professional learning plans and communication plans about the CLC. I played an active role on the central office literacy committee that developed a MTSS guidebook to support schools in implementing a tiered system of supports, which included use of SIM for all secondary schools in the division.
