Part 3 Reflection...

1. Like a lot of people feel and having been saying, AI technology is not going away, if anything it's absolutely on the rise and will continue to ascend for generations to come. I can only imagine where it will go from here, in various industries, in our schools, and in our everyday lives. For me personally, change and AI specifically can be a scary and intimidating thought. My thoughts are to take it one day and one school year at a time. Do my best to continue to learn, evolve with the times and technology, and to continue to grow in my personal knowledge of AI, etc. through Professional Development (Badges like this one), other training webinars offered, and finally through personal use and trial and error.

2. In regards to education's role and my role as an educator in this, to continue to evolve and adapt with the technology. Using AI, chatGPT, and teaching digital citizenship (also learned from a previous Badge) to our students. Teaching them to effectively use this type of technology for good and for their benefit, without "cheating" and not learning from it. Learning how to continue to alter and change my current units, lessons, methods, and strategies as an educator to better suit the overall goal of our school's mission statement, "every student, one community, ready for the future." Having our students be "ready for the future" is extremely significant and apparent, and it starts with us on the front lines and the role that we and technology will play in shaping our student's educational/social lives.

What are your thoughts and possible predictions on industry and/or life moving forward. What role does education have on the use of AI?

AI is one of the coolest technologies of our generation. It is amazing to think of the vastness and potential of AI technology.  It is also scary to think that i could be used as tool to hurt others or even take advantage of people.  I do think it is important to regulate the use of AI in certain industries, especially in the education arena!  AI is simply a tool and should be viewed as such.  Life has gotten so "easy" and sometimes I fear that students, who will then become members of the workforce, will not do the hard work that is sometimes necessary to function in that workforce. Not everything in life is instant and easy.  This has become an Amazon 2 day shipping generation, where everything happens so fast.  Saying that, I do not think we abandon the use of the technology.  We can educate students to use AI in ways that will help them and not do all of the work for them.

Chat GPT and other AI technologies have infiltrated our lives and it is not going away.  If every teacher were to come up with a set of guidelines on the appropriate uses of AI in the classroom, it could take away the stigma of using it to begin with.  It could be beneficial, for example, if a student was writing an essay on WWI and asked Chat GPT to give them a timeline of the war, for the sake of sequencing. We then could show students the unacceptable ways of using AI, like writing an opinion essay that is supposed to express their own personal opinion. When AI takes the place of critical thinking and personal thoughts, then it really becomes just another way of cheating.

Part 3 Evidence

I think that this could be very beneficial once they figure out what AI words best for schools and school work. I think this could take some of the stress or load off of teachers constantly creating things on their own. Having AI generate new questions, stories, backgrounds, or spark ideas, it can help us think deeper and gain new learning. It would be great if they could create an AI tutor that is able to help students at any time or place. The word is constantly evolving and growing. As educators if we don’t work to grow and challenge ourselves, how can we expect our students to?

Part 3: Reflection

In the art world, this rise in AI is similar to the huge impact photography had on painting. At the time of the invention of the camera, the mid 1800’s, there was this panic that painting would now be dead, because the camera could a capture images of the world quicker and more clearly. Instead, artists pushed the boundaries of paint to do what camera’s couldn’t and began using photography as a tool to help with other mediums. I believe this will happen in industry and life with AI as well, after the initial panic subsides. There will be setbacks, like certain jobs begin replaced by AI, but new roles will be created.

As educators we have to find ways to harness AI to guide and enhance learning. We are at a point where AI doesn’t have the motivation or desires that humans do behind these tasks. We can use that “power” influence what AI does. Our role as educators is to help students understand what AI is and how it can be used to help them learn, versus avoid actual learning.

Part 3

The idea that AI can provide personal tutoring to students is pretty exciting.  I am interested in trying out Khamingo for that reason.  I haven’t used ChatGPT yet to help me plan lessons or create rubrics, but I’m sure I will in the near future.  I hate creating rubrics, so that could be really nice!
I am a little frightened about what could be created by AI and passed off as “real,” especially with pictures.  Seeing won’t be believing.  I am glad to see that sometime images are labeled as being produced with AI, and I hope that continues.
In the dystopian YA book Feed, schools become a place where students learn how to use their Feeds (and decorate their homes).  I don’t think we’re quite headed there, but learning how and when and why to use the technology is going to be an increasingly important part of our jobs.  I don’t think we (as a society) have done a good job with understanding and teaching younger people how to use social media.  I hope we do better with AI.

Time Saver and Digital Citizenship

  • I think this is the direction we are headed.  AI can be such a valuable resource when used appropriately.  As teachers, we can use this to help with generating ideas, lessons, etc and then use our expertise to tweak it.  We can show our students, the process we are using for AI and then they can replicate it with tasks in the classroom.  AI can be a huge time saver.  It allows teachers more time to work with kids and focus on other things.
  • As educators, we need to teach students how to use this properly and with everything, there is a time and place for it.  Showing students how they can use it appropriately to help with tasks and researching things is great.  We don't want them to have such an emphasis on it, that they aren't doing any thinking themselves.  there needs to be balance.

Thoughts and Predictions and

AI is only going to become more embedded in our everyday lives so we better buckle up and get ready. I loved the idea of working "side by side" with AI to get more creative or make even better, engaging lessons for our students. That's awesome! I also love the idea of using Khanmingo to monitor the students use of AI and using it as a coach for the kids. To me, it's a win-win and the possibilities are endless!

Role of education

I think our role is to prepare our students to responsibly use AI and to continue to provide kids the necessary skills to be successful. They will always need strong communication, literacy, math, digital, critical thinking and problem solving skills. AI may be able to write papers and code for them; however, they will still need these skills to be successful in the world.

Summary

AI has endless possibilities for the future.  While it can have many benefits like so many things it can have negative affects.  Even now it is hard to know what is real and what is "fake."  This can be very harmful. If used correctly it can have many benefits. I thought it was interesting when they mentioned  the idea of being able to use AI to help "tutor" students so that teachers will have a chance to meet with students 1:1.  It was suggested that AI can help teachers get creative when teaching.  It can provide lesson hooks or a different way to teach lessons that will get the class fully engaged.  It can help with lesson planning or writing progress report comments.  I am interested in trying ChatGPT and Khamigo to explore different ways that I can use AI in my classroom.

What are your thoughts and possible predictions on industry and/or life moving forward. What role does education have on the use of AI?

School is changing. There's no way it won't. The idea that students will have one-on-one generated AI tutors in just a few short years is transformational to the system.

Dismantle the structure of school and rebuild. What do humans need today? I think many of us can argue that we may be losing human connections. I wouldn't be at all surprised if future standards of education are going to revolve around human interaction and social cues. Teachers will still continue to teach kids how to be problem solvers. Problem-solving will absolutely involve AI technology.

This is mind blowing to me.

I think AI Will be a very useful tool for saving time both in Business and education.

I think AI will be a very useful tool for saving time both in business and education. Using it to evaluate employees productivity, to improve productivity by handling tasks
By using AI to develop training tools, directions to carry out tasks, as well as to help evaluate employee progress productivity businesses can save time and money.  Things like taking inventory in ordering can be made much simpler using AI.
In education I personally am excited for the UBAI team to help speech language pathologist with kindergarten screening, collecting language samples, and especially online therapy that students can do independently. Seeing students in a group is not always appropriate for their needs, but with the amount of students we have it is a necessity. With AI presenting practice activities for articulation and language and Recording student responses, the SLP will have time to work with other students on instruction in a more appropriate way. If I have three students using AI to practice their speech sounds, I can spend individual time with a student helping them shape their tongue using mirrors and tools for the correct sound before they go off to practice. I could see this being used in a full classroom as well for teachers. Rather than meeting one on one with each student which takes a long time, students can participate in reading, knowledge, etc. activities using AI on their iPads at their seats giving the teacher much more individual time with students.

Role of AI

AI is going to continue to have a role in the lives of all mankind. The more AI is used, hopefully the smarter it will become with true facts for all to use. That is the tricky part about it as it is being used in so many platforms of life. At some point there will be approved tools for teachers and students to use in education.
Once this happens, hopefully teachers will have the knowledge to teach it to students so it is being used correctly and for positive experiences in life. Giving youth the knowledge can only give them power. They need to be able to use that power for good.

I do see AI being a big part of the future. It is here to stay and expanding at an exponential rate.   AI is playing a role in politics, social media, work environment and education.  It can be a powerful tool if used correctly.  For education,  I see it helping teachers expand their database for creating lessons and help engage students who are very easily distracted now and days.  For students, using AI can act as another resource for clarifying questions about topics learned during the school day.  In the future, students will be able to interact with AI as a tutor.
