FRAME routine -This summer my co-teacher and I attended the Excellence in Co-teaching Institute in Richmond on July 19, 2017.

This summer my co-teacher and I attended the Excellence in Co-teaching Institute in Richmond on July 19, 2017. I was trained on how to utilize the Frame routine. This is a new strategy that is designed to help students as they organize topics when learning about the key topic and related information that goes along with it. We used the Frame routine to help introduce place value into our third graders curriculum. It was a good way to help students understand and learn key information. It also helped students focus in on relationships on main ideas and details. I used the frame routine technique as a visual device when teaching a lesson on place value that helped my students understand and recall the key topic as well as all of the associated details that went along with the key topic. My students focused attention on the importance behind the key topic while also being able to identify the main ideas related to the key topic. My first strategy when teaching place value was to model numbers in various ways by using base ten blocks. For example I told my students “the ones are represented by individual squares, ten ones makes a group of ten also known as a “stick”, ten tens make a group of one hundred also known as a “flat”, and ten one hundreds makes a group of one thousand also known as a “3-dimensional cube.” After being able to review and identify the place value of the number we reviewed how to represent different numbers with base ten blocks by actually building the number. We started with smaller numbers then gradually worked our way up. We also taught them a little tune to remember in their head starting at the ones place and going all the way to the one hundred thousands place. We found that by asking students to represent numbers with concrete objects or pictures and carefully examine their use, it gives an insight into their conceptions. Once the students were able to grasp the understanding of place value we were able to put our Frame routine together with out key topic, main ideas, essential details and most importantly our “So what statement”. We told them that one important thing to learn about place value is knowing how certain  numbers work can help you use them.

I completed the training on September 13, 2011.

Frames are used regularly in our classroom to introduce lessons.  Frames are used to get students ready for the new topic of study.  I do my best to have most of the information filled in for the students.  Students co-construct frames in order to help them be better prepared to learn the new material.  They highlight the important information, fill in the missing vocabulary, and even solve math problems to coincide with the topic at hand.  This gives the students a GREAT introduction, as well as a good resource for reviewing material later.  The students in our classroom know the expectation of completing a frame.  They know what to highlight, how to fill in the important information, and even how to use the space wisely when solving math problems.  Our students use their frames in class when working on classwork to reinforce concepts learned.  Frames are very useful in math!!

Framing Routine September 2015

I completed my professional development in the Framing Routine in August 2017.

As a teacher at Central Academy Middle School , a SIM/CLC demonstration site I have had ample opportunities to use the Framing Routine.  For years, the Framing Routine has been used to introduce each new concept in our units of study.  I have found it to be a beneficial tool for all students, especially the students with disabilities, as it organizes information and is a valuable study tool.  Co-constructing the Frame enables students to interact with the material and provides them with a structured outline of important information.

Using the Cue-Do-Review Sequence of the Framing Routing has been valuable for students to make connections for the concepts being learned.

I had my PD with Christine Frawley on 8/29/17.

I had my PD with Christine Frawley on 8/29/17. The framing routine sounds like it will work for many subjects and with many lessons we already have in place.  Due to only being in our 7th day of school we haven't been able to use it yet, but are looking forward to it.

July 19, 2017 VDOE Excellence in Co-Teaching Initiative Summer Institute

While attending the Co-Teaching initiative conference, I was provided with a 'refresher' course on the Framing routine.  This is a universal technique that can be applied across many content areas with specific benefits in English, History, Math, and Science.  I am excited to continue enhancing my understanding of the development and application of the Framing routine and to learn how to best share the process with my colleagues.

I attended the Framing Routing Session on Wednesday, July 19, 2017.   The Framing Routine is a tool we plan on using in our Co-Teaching Collaborative classroom this school year with our students.  We feel this tool will be beneficial to meet the needs of such a diverse group of individuals. We feel our students will benefit from using this "visual device" to help increase knowledge.  We were able to take away from this session steps and activities students can use that will allow them to focus on a key topic, be able to reveal the main idea, help them analyze details, make the 'So What', and extend their understanding of the main idea.

I enjoyed learning the Framing routine.  I feel that this routine will be useful in English classes this school year.  I think this routine lends itself well to the pre-writing step of the writing process.  I hope to implement this strategy early in the school year as we prepare our students for their eighth grade writing SOL.

Attended the Co-teaching conference and was excited to have the framing modeled for me to be able to use in my classroom. I am sure it will be beneficial to my class.

I really liked this concept. I think it would be great to introduce a new concept. It could be used as a note taking tool.
