I didn't think about apps using student information to target advertising and using their data. I didn't think about identity theft of students. If an app is given to me by the school then I as a teacher I am assuming that the IT department has approved the app and we are good to go. If there is an app that I find that I would like to use then I would ask before using to make sure it was ok to put information in the app or if they could do it for me because that would be much faster.

Summary on Student Privacy Training

I thought the training was very helpful. It gave lots of good information and insight on the different acts and amendments that are in place to provide protection of student information. It also gave several tips on how to select apps for in class use that are safe and appropriate.

Student privacy must be the forefront of everything you do in your classroom or online.

I learned that if the apps are not on an approved list school district, don’t use it. Also, you can go to your IT person and have them review it and maybe the school district might approve it. You can also go to the website list from Common Sense and look it up. You must always keep in mind if FERPA with all situations.

It is imperative to include best practices of student privacy of educational apps in the classroom to avoid FERPA and other laws.

I learned how important it is make sure that apps that we use have to be secure and tested for privacy.  Student privacy is very important and we need to make sure that the protection is being monitored.

Teachers want to protect students virtual privacy to prevent violating laws. having their data exploited, or exposing them to strangers.

I learned that apps must be safe, secure, and restricted!  Choosing an unsafe app can negatively affect students by bombarding them with targeted ads which can lead to poor spending habits, financial exploitation, identity theft,  and other future consequences.  If you are not sure if an app is safe, contact your district IT department!
