TPACK/SAMR Reflection 2

Early on in my young teaching career I felt myself as just a follower with my other teachers in my grade level. Being young I did not feel like I could speak up and show my creativity in the classroom. We were doing choral reading, looking at english books and doing the problems, and then always doing worksheets. We would have a worksheet for every single thing. Classroom was quiet and heads were always down and that in turn caused some behavioral problems because they never had a release to show what they knew.

Within the last several years I started pushing the envelope of what I was doing in my classroom to allow my students to use those creative juices. I had to find myself and model for them its okay to be creative and think outside the box. This was new to them because it was not familiar to them what school was supposed to be according to society.
I was finding myself taking things and creatively changing them to make them work for my classroom. The validation from my students would keep pushing me to be more creative and able to stretch their thinking. This lesson being a hyperdoc really pushed me to be creative and think of what the end goal was for my students. Once I had the end goal of building the lesson for their engagement and technology the fun part started seeing how I could challenge their thinking.

The effectiveness of this lesson for my students was fabulous. They were able to work solo, in partners, or collaboratively with other peers. They were so immersed in their work that it flowed over into homework each night when it wasn’t even required. This lesson was something new and fresh and they craved this style of learning. It allowed for the students to work at their own pace while having their neighbors working on a completely different part of the assignment. Some teachers would have a hard time with this type of lesson because they would feel like there is zero control. When in reality there is total control of what the students are doing and completing. Before the students were even done completing this lesson, I was already coming up with another lesson similar to this style because I could see my students were flourishing in this style of teaching and learning!

Reflection 2: Teacher as Designers

For every lesson I plan, I am making decisions based on the goal to avoid a "worksheet rut". To me, a silent classroom with kids blindly doing work isn't what a chemistry class should look like as that isn't what science looks like. There is collaboration, curiosity, and trial and error - that's what I want my classroom to look and sound like.

So every decision I make is me being creative to alter traditional, worksheet based lessons into activities that allow students to practice expanded thinking and collaboration in a way that engages them and is working them towards a deep level of thinking.

For example, in my TPACK lesson, instead of a worksheet full of practice problems, I chose to do a whiteboard practice as a class so that students can get real-time feedback and help their partners with each problems. Students can walk the class through different examples and discuss how to proceed if they get stuck.

In my everyday classes, I utilize different applications like Quizlet for vocab practice, and Quizizz for a formative assessment at the end of a lesson. I try to bring several different forms of technology a lesson when I can.

Reflection 2

I have used some creativity when finding ways to incorporate Quizziz and Google Forms but if technology is something that I find I need to use more in class, I will have to find new and more interesting ways to do that. I think finding more reason to incorporate more technology into the classroom will push me to be even more creative when planning lesson plans. As of now I have designed a lesson plan that will get the job done and will teach them the knowledge that they need to know, I dont want to design a plan that will hinder that process just so I can include more technology.

Reflection 2 Part 2

Students can extend what they learn in this lesson by how they can practice and apply what they have learned. As the teacher, I can extend their learning with finding other books that students can apply their knowledge of the standard. I can also refer to other platform like Seesaw to create my own activities, and from there I can differentiate between students but in the end they are still practicing the same skill that they can apply when reading on their own.

Reflection 2

My decision has been an example of teacher creativity because of the many tools used in making this lesson. I have created a 3d model for the students to see what they are learning about along with creating their own model. I believe this lesson is novel, effective, and whole because it incorporated new technology and it shows the students learning by creating models. My decisions in the process are an example of a teacher as a designer because it leads students to acquire the skill of designing a model of their learning to always look back on.

Reflection 2

This relinquishes some learning from teachers and leads students to active learning and creating. I believe this lesson is novel, effective, and whole because it is a new technology and physically shows the students learning. My decisions during the process have shown that I can design a lesson that leads students to acquire a skill and are able to show it effectively.

To design as a teacher, you create lessons based on decisions that allow students to explore and make meaning on their own.

Any good teacher is reflective, and that reflection drives creativity. As I make these decisions in this process, I reflect on what I’ve done and what I still could do. The learning never stops so therefore, nor does the creativity. If I continue to educate myself on new and different ways to do things, the thoughtfulness that goes into planning and presenting can only grow,

This particular lesson on photojournalism is neW in that the end product is something that never existed before. The photos, their subjects, the captions, the photographers, and possibly even the technology used will all be different. The reason the lesson is effective is that it will immediately be applied to an authentic product that the students and their families have paid for. The kids get a wonderful sense of accomplishment when their work is published. This leads to its wholeness as well - it is deeply bound to the greater contextual purpose of creating an historical document for not only the students but the community overall.

To design as a teacher, you create lessons based on decisions that will ultimately allow your students to explore and make meaning on their own. I found that in reviewing how I teach photojournalism, I first guide the students and then give them the space to approach the material on their own. They are then given the time to share their work and provide constructive feedback, resulting in better work and influencing future lessons. A well-designed lesson will motivate students to want to seek more instruction; fortunately, the content here lends itself to that with most of my audience, but I still feel the lesson has been widely successful in this area of engagement as well.

Teacher Creativity

Thankfully, my major is all about creativity being based in technology and engineering. The premise of our course work and standards revolve around using a design process to solve real-world problems, and at the core is coming up with a creative solution by using sometimes out-of-the-box solutions. This assignment is no different, showcasing a variety of ways students can develop their own creative process by working and understanding the steps in construction by following a real-world example/process to understand the concept. This lesson fits into a NEW model because it breaks the students out of a traditional classroom setting, where they just in sit at their desks, listening to a lecture, and gets them into a lab style setting where the work is hands-on and they get to create something. Most of the time, with a Tech Ed class, the class is usually always elective based- so the kids who take the class are actually wanting to be there, so these students will most likely appreciate a hands-on or craft-based experience. Not to mention, these students are also typically hands-on learners, so they'll be learning and understanding the course content better by completing it in a model anyways.
