Pros and Cons for Online Assessment

Google Forms
  • Google Forms is a great tool for either summative or formative assessments. Teachers can create different  style questions (i.e. multiple choice, short answer, etc.). Teachers can also assign points for questions and frame it more as a graded quiz. Google Forms has lots of extensions that can create more options for teachers to be creative. Most importantly, Google Forms is free! So it is accessible to everyone.
  • Pros: Free, can create as a quiz, lots of different question types, helpful extensions
  • Cons: No way to check to see if students are cheating
2. Kahoot!
  • Kahoot is an interactive game for students. Teachers can create a fun quiz for students to compete against each other and in groups. Kahoot does have an additional feature where you can create it as a homework assignment. Although it was free, Kahoot has now added some fees for use. This would be great for formative assessments as teachers can pull a report of students answers after the Kahoot game is over.
  • Pros: fun for students, can use as a review game/homework, teachers can run a report of student answers
  • Cons: may have to pay some fees, may be a distraction for students
3. Poll Everywhere
  • Poll Everywhere is an interactive real-time polling system. The user can create polls based off of questions that are multiple choice, open ended, and other types as well. Data is shown in real time and can even be shared during your online meeting. Links to the survey polls can be sent out early as well. The website does offer free accounts but each poll is limited to 25 responses.
  • Pros: real time data results, information is sharable, multiple forms of questions
  • Cons: can be fees

Pros and Cons

Three online tools that could be used for formative and/or summative assessments are Nearpod, Seesaw, and Flipgrid. Nearpod allows for interaction from students when it comes to lesson plans. For example, you could have a basic presentation but integrate reflection questions for your students to answer as they go along the presentation. Two pros of Nearpod would be that you are gaining student interaction and it could be used for E-Learning. Two cons of Nearpod would be that it is not very active and it could potentially be expensive. Seesaw is comparable to Schoology or Canvas; it is a platform educators can use to add activities (lessons/assignments) for students to do. This is a great way to integrate formative assessments so you can track class and individual student progress. Two pros of Seesaw are that progress can be tracked easily and students can interact with each other electronically. Two cons of Seesaw are that there aren’t very many editing options and it is easy to lose assignments if a student accidentally clicks off. Flipgrid is a platform used for video discussion. Students can respond to questions, reflect on content, leave questions, and much more. Two pros of Flipgrid are that every student can be involved and it helps students with speaking and listening skills. Two cons of Flipgrid are that students could make inappropriate responses and students could waste class time if not monitored frequently.
