This class was a research-based independent study that I conducted. I
took it in conjunction with applying for the Boren Scholarship, so it
allowed me to research various aspects of Russian public policy, foreign
policy, identity, etc. and it allowed me to begin my own research,
which is focused on how U.S. national security is affected when Russia's
perception of identity shifts.
Course Description
During
this course we will survey Russian history after the dissolution of the
Soviet Union. Drawing on selected chapters in broad historical surveys
and focused scholarly articles and chapters, we will examine the
political, social, economic, and cultural aspects of this history. In
addition, following recent trends in Russian historiography, the course
will approach Russian history, not only as it relates to the history of
Western Europe, but also to that of Eastern Eurasia. The course will
treat the rise of Mikhail Gorbachev, the Boris Yeltsin revolt and
presidency, and through the Vladimir Putin era.
