The Word mapping strategy is a great way to support a student in developing a deeper understanding of an important vocabulary word and have better access/retrieval of it later.

Reflection: Today we learned the Word Mapping strategy to assist students in not memorizing vocabulary words but acquiring word knowledge and having the knowledge of prefixes, roots, and affixes in order to better understand how these parts of a word can assist in discovering the meaning.

12/3/2018 Word Mapping Strategy

Word Mapping is a strategy students can use to help them figure out the meaning of unknown words.   Using morphemes, words are broken apart and analyzed to predict the meaning of words (i.e. prefix, root words, and suffix).  To utilize this strategy, students must be able to read at a 3rd or 4th grade level.   Struggling students often need instruction in the following:
- meanings of words and word parts
- how to identify morphemes (parts of words that have meaning)

Attended PD session on 12/4/18. Explored the Word Mapping Strategy book. Utilized Word Mapping strategy to break words apart and understand their origins. This would be exceptionally helpful for teachers to utilize in the classroom to help enhance student's vocabulary.
