This strategy can help teachers meet the needs of both struggling readers and proficient readers.

SIM for PA P2G

Word Mapping Strategy is aimed at predicting the meaning of words. In particular, if a student cannon identify and pronounce prefixes and suffixes, she may benefit from instruction in the Word Mapping Strategy before beginning instruction in the Word Identification Strategy.

The following acronym is used for the Word Mapping Strategy:

Map the word parts
Attack the meaning of each part
Predict the word's meaning
See if you're right!

I was intrigued by the research outcomes as noted on pp. 3-4 of the The Word Mapping Strategy (WMS). In essence the study showed that students who have been taught the WMS can learn to perform the strategy. Moreover, they can learn the meaning of vocabulary words when they use the strategy. Finally, they can predict the meaning of significantly more words than students who use a similarly powerful vocabulary learning strategy. The WM students earned an average of 61% of the points available on the prediction test versus the average score of 24% earned by the LINCS students.

Interesting way to work with words. I have used something like this before and the students had it in a notebook and anytime they came across a word they didn't know they put it in there.

The word mapping strategy is a great tool for my role as a literacy consultant as well as a P2G consultant. This seems like a powerful strategy to use with students.

The Word Mapping Strategy is a strategy designed to teach students how to identify word parts, specify the meaning of word parts, and then predict the meaning of words based on their understanding of the meaning of the word parts.  Students are given a Pretest to assess their current skills and then the strategy is described and modeled by the teacher.  Once the teacher has modeled the strategy once, the teacher and students should move on the guided practice and then independent practice with feedback.  Once the students appear to be secure with the strategy, they will be given a post-test and then followed-up by the teacher to ensure generalization.

Participated in the PaTTAN SIM Training on 12/4/18. Trainers were Patty G. and Diane G. for Word Mapping Strategy

We participated in activities with the Word Mapping Strategy.  The approach focuses on affixes, suffixes, and roots.  The process supports student learning of pronunciation of new words and meaning.  The devices used were word maps,  word mapping notes sheets and memory tables.

Word Mapping

I participated in a training with Patty and Diane on 12/3 and 12/4/2018 which covered Word Mapping.  In additional to professional development in this area, we collaborated with other teammates and used this tool to create our own word maps.  I think this is a great tool  to use with appropriate students to expand their understanding of language.
