The Word Mapping Strategy

I learned how to use the word mapping strategy today, which incorporates numerous effective components (explicit instruction, graphic organizers, incorporating student voice).  I believe this will prove to be a very useful strategy for students and teachers.

Pattan training on 12/4/2018 SIM/P2G

Attended a training on 12/4/2018 at Pattan Harrisburg, PA
We learned and practiced lessons on identifying prefixes, suffixes, root words.  Then we learned how to identify definitions of each part of the word to make predictions.  After completing 4 lessons we learned and practiced word mapping.  we watched a video clip from a science class where she used word mapping.  We also highlighted and bookmarked certain sections within the book for easy access.

PD session December 4

Attended PD on Dec 4th
Summary of the word mapping strategy is utilizing morphology to enable students to expand their vocabulary acquisition by predicting the meaning of new words they encounter across content areas that would typically limit their understanding but no longer do so by better understanding prefixes, suffixes and the root words.

reflection for Word Mapping Strategy

12-4-18
I attended the SIM training today at PaTTan with Diane and Patty.  The Word Mapping Strategy follows a morphological approach that teaches students to break words into prefixes, suffixes, and root words in order to predict the meaning of words. Along with the strategy itself, the memory table is an excellent tool to help students remember and make connections among complex vocabulary words in content areas.  The video example of the memory table was very helpful in demonstrating the application of this strategy in a classroom.  After seeing that, I see how the whole strategy would make learning new words easier for students, because they can make connections through the meanings of the word parts.

Attended Xtreme Reading PD August 2015 at DPI in Raleigh, NC. Pam Leitzel was the Professional Developer for the PD.

I was excited to begin the Xtreme Reading program. We had a teacher in our school previously teach the program and it was extremely successful. On the first few days of the PD, one of the strategies that I learned was Word Mapping.

September 2016, I completed a PLC with Janet Atallah, SIM Specialist, then I starting using Word Mapping with my reading classes.

Here is what Janet said during our first coaching meeing:  Laura has started teaching Word Mapping and has finished the Prefix introduction lesson.  She did not have PD in Word Mapping this summer, but was given the materials by another teacher.  I showed her how to score the pretest, and she will give it this week.  We went over scoring and over some of the lessons. Laura will give the students progress charts and have them monitor their progress on the charts.  I will send Laura the powerpoint, the Live Binder link, and some supplementary materials for Word Mapping.  When we meet on Oct. 11, I will share some tier 2 vocabulary lists that can be utilized when students master the strategy. We will email so that I can answer any questions Laura may have about implementation. O
