Instruction with 2 small groups

This frame was introduced in a small group setting after the teacher had done a whole group instruction.  The group was passed the frame and ask to reflect on the information that was taught previously.  The students were able to start to fill in the frame. They were able to describe the topic.  The main ideas were easily identified for the students (the spelling was different for them).  The teacher had a nice pacing for the students and the teacher also gave appropriate wait time for answers.  The teacher had them partner up with each other to give examples.  She then had them write the examples they wanted after each pairing gave an example.  One of the students had trouble writing in the appropriate spaces. (IEP accommodation)  I suggested that next time she has the main idea and the definitions typed up and the student can find the right answer and glue it in the correct place. For the extension, this group opened on their chrome book a previous performance task.  They  were told to added figurative language to the writing.   The second small group she had, she had already modified the FRAME for the group.  I like how she differentiated between the groups to meet the needs of both groups.  She also had a different extension for that group.   The teacher had several grade appropriate books for the students to go through and find figurative language in them.  She had them in 2 person groups to do that.  Both groups will then tart a new performance task writing and this FRAME will be referenced again during that lesson.

I met with the participant afterwards and have received her data. We have also discussed the FRAME through email.

The teacher likes the way the FRAME allows the teacher and the students to organize information in manageable chunks.  She thinks it will be helpful for struggling learners.  She used the FRAME content enhancement routine for the first time with a group of world history students on a unit they did not do well on.  She retaught the content using a FRAME and saw an 8 point gain over all.  Hopefully as she gets more adept at using the FRAME, her students will experience more success.

Observation Description

While observing Ms. Quash's class I observed how the students reacted to the expectations of implementing the FRAME. She used to the FRAME to assist with preparing the students for the writing SOL.  The students were cooperative in learning how to use the FRAME to improve their writing skills. However, Ms. Quash could have stood up and walked round the room to make sure all of the students were participating and utilizing the FRAME the correct way. (For more details please see the Implementation Checklist feedback review.)

Self Reflection

It is very interesting to review the video and reflect on how the lessons progress. This process takes a bit of practice for the students.  I really like the flexibility of this organizational technique and how I can use it for all subjects. The students continue to improve with practice. Sometimes I find that the frames do not have enough space for some students to write, so I am able to modify them. A challenge was getting the permission to videotape students.  We selected groups but had to adjust them because of the lack of permissions. Some students also struggle with forming legible letters and spacing. This has improved with practice as well. In reflecting on my own practices, I need to be more sensitive to pacing of students because some of them were still writing when I started discussing the next term. This could cause confusion or anxiety. I will make sure that all students are comfortable with the space, or I could provide additional accommodations.

Student Interview

Student Interview I interviewed of the students from the group about the framing technique.  This student has an IEP and struggles in the content area for which this particular lesson was used.

How is this technique useful? The student thinks this method is good and helps her understand the concept better. She stated that is was hard at first but has become easier with practice. She says that it helps her think about the main ideas and make connections between them.

When do you think this technique is useful for you?The student stated that it really helps her remember and understand math vocabulary because math is difficult for her. She also claimed that it is very helpful in history and science, and she gave several examples of how it helps her remember content. (Examples included learning about the 5 presidents, steps of the scientific method, and parts of an atom.)

Main idea and detail lessons using the frame.

We used the frame to help us identify main idea and details in a non-fiction text.  The students had multiple opportunities to develop this skill with the frame.  This also helped them transition into writing summaries with main idea and details during writing time.  The more the students used the frame, the easier it became for them to understand the concept.  I feel that the frame also helped them focus as it gave them a tangible goal for their reading time.  They knew that they needed to have that completed once they read a passage.  I was sure to find passages with very clear main idea and details when we first started, and then as time went on we could find harder passages where the students really had to think about the difference between a main idea and a detail.

Frame Implementation - Functions

I implemented this Frame with a small class of 13 students. There were no special education students in this class, but there is one homeless student and one student who struggles with math and has not passed the state assessment test for two years.  The other students are typical middle school students with grades ranging from A to C. I used the FRAME as a review for the unit test. The students co-created the document which allowed them to use it as a study guide. The results of the test for all three of my classes was good but this bell had a 100% pass rate (70 or above). The other classes had an 85% and 86% pass rate. I found challenges in trying to get the students to say what I wanted them to say! A strong questioning technique is a plus when doing these. I have used the Frame with Special education students where the items I wanted them to know, where cut out and they organized them on the frame. That was very successful and I would use that method with this topic for my struggling students. Whichever method you use, it is imperative that you create this in advance.  Being able to anticipate what the students will says helps to keep you on track.

My Reflection on the Frame lesson with 1st grade, and my co-teacher.

We are currently introducing the new Math standard for money (1.8 The student will determine the value of a collection of like coins (pennies, nickels, or dimes) whose total value is 100 cents or less). In recognizing that our 1st grade students would gain the most benefit from engaging in the information rather than in laboring over the written word, I chose to introduce the FRame using a cut and paste option. During whole class instruction the previous day, we had introduced the three coins and discussed the different way to identify and discern between the three coins - this small group activity was used as a small group activity to ensure learning and understanding. The activity was completed with the four small groups of students. Once we had finished sorting all of the ways we could identify the coins and had sorted the pieces correctly, the students pasted them down and then extended the information by moving to the next station which involved grabbing a handful of coins and sorting them into the different coins. Higher students were called upon to independently count the similar coins and compare what they had more of. Those students who require more support completed the counting activity with teacher support.
The video was shared with my co-teacher Mrs. Bradshaw - we discussed how the information was sorted to help the students identify important and relevant information and focus on specific aspects of money. We discussed how to use this strategy with other topics and whether or not it had been relevant and useful for our students. A challenge is that the Frame is meant for higher grade levels, making it a tougher tool to use.

Implementation

The teachers who I trained in FRAME are on summer break right now so they will not implement until the beginning of the 2017-2018 SY. Prior to the beginning of the school year, we will discuss plans for implementation and determine dates they plan to use FRAME so I can be present to observe them and provide feedback and follow-up coaching.

UPDATE: I have reached out to the teachers who were trained during the summer and received one question from one pair regarding suggestions on how to use the FRAME with a specific topic. I did provide suggestions, but never received any follow-up from this. I also reached out to those who we trained and offered to observe their use of the FRAME routine with their students, but that offer was not responded to as of November 20, 2017. My hope is to be able to connect with those who were trained once they return from the upcoming holidays and be able to observe and provide feedback to them prior to the end of the school year. In addition, I am supporting several school divisions and hope to work with teachers within these schools to introduce them to FRAME and begin making plans this year for them to incorporate this tool into their toolbox for next school year.
