5. Submit Implementation Portfolio

My co teacher and I taught this lesson to our collaborative Math 7 class.  There are 24 students with 10 who are identified as needing special education services with an IEP.  We were able to teach this lesson during our Math Workshop.  We had them complete the Concept Comparison during the Meet the Teacher portion of our day.  This consists of a small group of 6 students that rotate to us for individualized instruction. 

I worked with a colleague to co-construct a comparison table. Our overall concept was reading instruction and the concepts to compare were phonics and phonemic awareness.  The overall construction of the comparison table went fairly smoothly.  In my position as a TaC consultant, my access to students is limited, therefore, my co-construction with a colleague.  My colleague was able to envision how she would be able to use this strategy/tool to instruct other professionals in comparing topics such as IEPs and 504 Plans, and accommodations and modifications.  The table does allow for expansion of ideas and further discussion of related concepts.  

We did this in our SIM groups at PaTTAN and then we used it with our K-2 teachers who took a one day, full day  training with us.

We used the routine in two classes.  One class is an English 11 elective that targets skills relating to deficit areas in both reading and writing. Currently, there are 7 students in this class and they are making terrific gains.  Routines like the concept comparison routine help cement ideas and fill in any gaps (especially in concepts that may have been taught in earlier grades that might not have been fully learned at the time).   There are 27 students in our college prep English 11 class. We have used the Concept Comparison Routine less often, but it was helpful in understanding the background information for the Crucible.  To connect our research of Arthur Miller and the McCarthy Trials, we complete a Comparison Table using the Concept Comparison Routine.
