I played the digital game called "5 in a row: 3 factors". This ties in great with the skills needed for determining the volume of the shapes in the unit.  Multiplying 3 factors is a skill that, if not secure, will be a major issue for a student trying to determine volume.  This would fit in perfectly as a rotation and students can also play some of the other levels in the games to practice skills that might not be secure as they build their math skills towards attaining this.  I like how the digital games allow for students of all current skills to access and practice where they are to hopefully build their fluency.

Part 3

The digital center I selected is Check it off Stage 1. This center focuses on building fluency with addition facts within 1–10,  making addition equations, and solving problems based on built equations. This can be incorporated during the center portion of the math lesson. While I pull a small group of students, the rest of the class can be playing this game independently or with a partner.

Task 3 Evidence

The digital center I selected (Find the Number: Stage 1) helps students understand and refine their skills with 4.OA.4 and involves finding all factors of a given number. This center could be used as something my "fast finishers" could do when they finish their cool down, when I have a sub, or during RTI. The fact that students can access it digitally also means it could be done at home for practice or review.

  1. I chose to play the Unit 1 / stage 1 center game "Connecting Cubes: Explore" 
This center was introducing students to the game, exploring connecting cubes, and how to navigate the buttons on the app. This center game is helpful because it gives the students the opportunity to explore and play around with the app and get used to how to use the app without requiring specific steps, which will help them be more successful when they are using the app later on in the school year. I can incorporate this as one of the centers in the beginning of the year to teach in small group so the students can become familiar with how to navigate the app!

Task 3

  1. What skills did the digital center address?
I chose to play level 6 in the 5-in-a row game.  This game addressed adding double digit numbers. I liked that it gave options to add double-by-double digit numbers or double digit-by-single digit numbers.  This allows me to modify the game according to the student.  I also like to use the paper version of games when I can.  I feel that the hands-on  practice his very helpful because kids tend to treat these versions as a tool instead of a game.
  1. How might you incorporate this center into your math block/parts of your day?
Centers are a terrific way to reinforce skills being taught. Since centers are not part of our daily lessons in 3rd grade, I need to get creative and find the time for kids to use them. Depending on my schedule, I might be able to include them in my morning routine a few times a week.  Another option I am thinking about is to have a “game day” at the end of each unit section.

Digital Center

The center I explored was Number Puzzles, Adding and Subtracting within 20. In this game, students use digit cards to add and subtract numbers within 20. I could use this center game as a center rotation, for early finishers or for students who need additional practice on this skill.

Evidence 3

The digital center addresses the skills that are working towards being mastered in the lesson.  The stages will help me as a special education teacher because I can go to prior grade levels (if needed) to create a center that works on the content, but at a level that the student can attain.

I will start by reviewing the center as a class to make sure the content and expectations are understood.  The digital centers are great because they can be used while I  pull other students for small group instruction.  I can work on individualized instruction at a small group table while the remaining students are practicing skills at their academic level on their iPads.  I will alternate between centers with a peer and for students to play by themselves.

Task 3

The digital center addressed one to one counting. The digital center connecting cubes can help to deepen understanding of the content taught. This allows for another way to explore the math tools & the digital center allows for me to model whole group in a more effective way. In Kindergarten centers are daily, and this allows for differentiation and for a more individualized learning for students at different levels.

Capture Squares Center Game

I chose to play the center game called Capture Squares. I chose to play Stage 7 - Multiplication of 6-9,  as it was recommended by the center summary for 4th grade. The game covered a lot of skills. Not only did focus on basic fact fluency for the factor combinations the 4th graders often struggle with, but it used important vocabulary like factor and product. I also like that four sides of each square must be captured before a player can claim it as captured. Lots of practice with factors that have the same product. There is also a  lot of math strategy involved to set a player up to capture different squares  - which makes it challenging as. 

In my math block, I would have my students play this game against the computer a few times - perhaps when they are finished with the classwork for the unit before allowing them to play one another. This way they have time to figure out some helpful strategies before taking on a classmate.

Digital Centers

  1. I chose to play Counting Collections: Up to 10.  This game helps in growing skills, including how to count accurately up to 10 and identifying numbers up to 10.  This game used 5 frames and made it easy to create 10 frames to organize objects so students can accurately use "count all" as a strategy.  In addition, students are exposed to "counting on" as a strategy.  
  2. This center could be a daily warm-up center/whole-group practice or assigned as a center on center day.  I love that student practice can be differentiated in stages to support or extend student learning.  It is also beneficial for students to have the opportunities to play both digitally and in written form.  This gives students variety and provides much needed opportunities for students to touch & count, draw & count, and write numbers accurately.

What I did in the digital center

The digital center I chose was about counting on from a number. I love that with the different levels you can have students do the center that is just right for them.
