Liberta-Part 2

I was very interested in the Criterion Interactive Prototype.  This AI technology is designed to help and assist students with their writing (planning/feedback/editing) but not replacing the teacher.  This prototype provides AI generated feedback and tips in a user friendly and graphically pleasant way to get students to look closer and more critically at their own writing.  Students in Global have to write an enduring issues essay.  They have to analyze documents, organize them, and choose three to use as evidence to address the task.  The task is to explain how an enduring issue has been present throughout time and how it endures.  The documents are meant to just be support/evidence, but by the time students are done analyzing and editing them they lose sight of the task and usually write an essay that just describes what the documents are showing them.  This is the biggest struggle in this writing piece.

The Criterion Interactive Prototype allows a teacher to input prompts/rubric criteria for what the essay is tasked.  Once a student has written the essay they can submit it and the prototype will generate a score and specific feedback.  The feedback is linked to specific portions of the essay and gives suggestions.  The teacher can review he feedback before showing the student and letting them do an edit.  This prototype also allows for multiple edit phases.  One phase can focus on organizational/prioritizing feedback.  The next can focus on addressing the task and document use.  The final can be on grammar and punctuation.  This multi-phase edit helps the teacher to move through writing pieces quicker, and allows students to work on their areas of struggle one step at a time so it is more meaningful and less overwhelming.  I could totally see myself using this for final exam review as we prepare for the Regents exam.

Part 2

WOW.. The Criterion prototype would have been a writing game changer for my ELA classroom.  Students receiving instant feedback on their writing for areas to improve and then allow me to go in and check that work and prioritize some of the feedback would have been an amazing way to clone myself in my classroom.  It is extremely time consuming to get to each student and give them some specific feedback that they can then use to improve their initial drafts.  This would give them a starting point so that they do not have to wait for me to be able to read and give feedback on their writing in order to start some of the revision work.

This obviously does not replace a teacher but seems like it would greatly enhance my ability to get to all students and help them grow as writers.

Part 2

Data Driven Analytics is definitely something that would be beneficial in my classroom.  This would offer insight into student progress, spot areas of improvement and see patterns where information needs to be revisited and retaught.  The example provided in the video of using AI to help with essay writing seemed like an overwhelming and timely process.
Currently when I assign students an in-class writing assignment (that aligns to a NYS Regents prompt), it takes the class approx. 2-3 days to complete.  While we offer students comments on Google Drive or on Schoology for writing essays, it is not frequent where students take us up on our offers to make revisions, rewrite sections to improve their grades and even peer edit (unless we take the time in class to do so).  I do like the idea that when using AI, educators can customize rubrics to fit NYS standards or rubrics for the Regents Exam.  It is a nice feature where educators can override scores we disagree with and provide feedback such as giving praise, ask questions and make suggestions.
