Introduction to how Chatbots and Large Language Models Work

In This Task…

  1. Learn more about the new technology driving the large changes in AI, featuring two new videos on Large Language Models (like ChatGPT) and Generative AI. Hear how these new technologies work directly from the experts: Mira Murati, CTO of OpenAI, and Cristóbal Valenzuela, CEO of RunwayML.

In a short paragraph or two, respond to each prompt:
  • Explain what Large Language Models are
  • Describe the difference between generative and predictive AI.

Chatbots and AI

So, I think of Large Language Models as these super-smart text wizards. They've basically analyzed tons of info and can chat, write, and get context like they're human. However, there are many limitations to that since they cannot alwasy detect the nuances of a human.
Now, generative vs. predictive AI. Generative AI is the cool creative tool that can whip up original material/content, not just repeat facts. It's all about fresh, creative content. On the other hand, predictive AI is like your phone texts or a Google search. It looks at past data, spots trends, and predicts what might go down next. One's a creative wordsmith, and the other's a future-gazing pro!

Fireside Chat Response

Prompt 1:Large language learning models are systems that are sort of based off of neural networks resembling the human brain.  They are trained on vast amounts of data (texts) so that it can become better at predicting/generating responses that fit the criteria given to it by a user. AI tools such as Chat GPT is a great example of a LLM.  It has been fed a huge amount of data from the internet so it can generate responses based on what it has learned.

Prompt 2:
Generative AI's focus is on creating new content for a user based on inputs, while Predicitve AI works off of what it has been taught and uses algorithims to predict what would come next.
I usually think of predicitive AI like a chat window you might use for customer service. This uses what you type in to predict what you might be looking for for help.
Chat GPT is a good example of generative AI.  It has the ability to create "new" work based on what it has learned and what you might be asking for.  The example from the video uses Shakespeare as an inspiration and GPT can ceate a new piece that uses his work as a model so that it can match his style.

Summary

Larger Language Models are language models that are based on an enormous amount of information.  (The attached video referenced that this would include the plethora of information-specifically found on the internet).  A larger language model would generate new "human- like " information or text as a result of the input or task the user was seeking.

The generated responses from these larger language models would take into consideration varies details and probabilities- such as word choice, repetition, etc.
Generative AI creates new content based on given parameters.  In contrast, Predictive AI is focused on making predictions or classifications based on patterns and relationships found.

Part I-Liberta

Large language models are forms of AI that are designed to interpret/translate/analyze massive amounts of data or text before generating the desired response.  The video mentioned large language models reading entire text books, plays, etc… before generating the response to the task or question at hand.  It is also referred to as an NN or neuro network that is meant to mimic the neurotransmitter functions of the brain that allow us to absorb large amounts of information and create a simplified or streamlined response.  Letter, probabilities, and statistics are used to generate this technology.

The video goes on to discuss two different types of AI that are in high use today.  One is generative AI and the other is predictive AI.  After viewing the youtube clip I gather that the main difference is purpose.  Predictive, to me, seems to be more focuses on a response or related to decision making. It seems to have more of a focus on accuracy and answering a questions/task.  I interpret generative AI as more of a creator.  The video discusses it for creating original content based on prompts and coming up with something entirely new.
