Co-construct and Instruct
I have been using the Unit Organizer Routine with students for eight years. I have been observed by my coach launching, floating, and typing up my units using this routine. I am a SIM PDer in Learning Strategies and also the Building Leader of our Literacy Leadership Team (CLC/SIM initiative).

Use the Unit Organizer Routinely
I have been using this routine regularly for eight years. I use it routinely to begin each class, to assess learning, and to keep students aware of pacing throughout the unit.

Implementation Portfolio

Students: This year, I am using the Unit Organizer Routine with students in English 7 (Pre-AP and General Education groups)  as well as a SIM Strategy class for at-risk 6th graders. In the past, I have also co-taught classes with ELL and SWD populations using this routine. English 7 classes usually consist of about 25 students of diverse backgrounds. The SIM Strategy class consists of about 10 students who meet on alternate days (A day and B day groups). I created the devices for this Course by following the guidebook and working with my coach.

Length of Implementation: I have been implementing the Unit Organizer Routine with students for eight years as part of the CLC and SIM initiatives in my district. During a typical week in the school year, I refer to the device daily and co-construct part of it at least twice per week. I use the Expanded Map and Unit Self-Test Questions for frequent formative assessments and build in opportunities to review and reteach based on student responses. I teach two 90-minute blocks of English 7 and one block of the SIM Strategy class per day. The amount of time spent on the device depends on where we are in the unit. Launch usually takes about 30 minutes.

Log (Sept 15, 2017 – video follows)
:

What went well: I was pleased with the co-construction process. I usually pre-teach a bit of the unit, either in a warm-up or a previous activity, so that students can draw on that experience and prior knowledge to co-construct. The students were able to make connections and contribute to co-construction with a high level of engagement and understanding. I think they enjoyed coming up with the Unit Self Test Questions in a jigsaw format and sharing them with their classmates.

What needs improvement: Last year, I worked toward my Specialist Micro-Credential in the Vocabulary LINCing Routine. What I mostly struggled with the most then was the Review part of Cue-Do-Review. This year, during my observation, I did well with the Review but actually got the Cue and Do out of order a bit. It was helpful to receive feedback from my coach on following the implementation guide with fidelity to ensure that students are adequately prompted to begin the routine. Another concern of mine is the time it takes to launch a unit and the level of student engagement during the process. Admittedly, my main reason for using fill-in-the-blank self-test questions was time. It could be done quickly enough that my students had not lost interest. My coach has emphasized the opportunity for critical thinking that goes along with the students developing the questions. My goal for this year is to give them that opportunity but keep the launching process time-efficient and engaging for students.

Reflection & Continuous Practice

I reflected with my mentor on the co-construction on the Unit Organizer Routine and have continued to update my use in the classroom as well as drafting with teachers and colleagues by using the CRAFT steps to draft and launch the unit.
