Video Overview (25 minutes)

After watching the video - I learned several things.  

- I first learned what CASEL stands for - Collaboration for Acadmic Social Emotional Learning and that it is not a curriculum in and of itself but rather a collaboration.
- I was encouraged when the video shared the benefits of CASEL

      * Improved ACademic Performance
      * It has long term benefits - not just short term
      * It is a wise financial investment
      * SEL helps lifetime outcomes
- It was interesting - when asked the question about our vision and which areas do we see need to be worked on the most - my answers were right along with the polls.  Mental Health followed by academics clearly need to be addressed and can be supported through this.  
- The CASEL 5 wheel was a great visual - with the parts being self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and in turn making responsible decisions - and promoting these skills inside and outside of the classroom.  
***I would use resources from - the district resource center because pf the lesson plans, and possibly the guide to school SEL.

1. Foremost, we need to reflect on what we want young people to be able to do before planning SEL lessons. What skills do I want my students to have and what can I do to help them achieve these skills.

2.SEL learning should start as early as  Pre-k. I incorporate SEL into my Pre-K and Kindergarten lessons by using the "Listening Larry" curriculum where we focus on social awareness and relationship skills. I want my students to be active listeners, to think about how other's feel and how to show gratitude and empathy.

3. How we behave has life long implications in terms of our own self-awareness, management and relationship building. Students must learn how to regulate their emotions and control their impulses. They must have opportunities to practice goal setting and perseverance.

4. Self-awareness is important. By understanding ourselves first, we can better understand others. 

5. SEL teaches life long skills. It ties self-management and awareness, social awareness, relationships and responsible decision all together. Ultimately, SEL promotes a healthy mindset which hopefully leads to happy and successful life experiences.

1. The use of SEL can help improve lifetime outcomes throughout a child’s lifetime many years after completing high school. Through SEL, students can acquire the skills, strategies, and concepts that they can carry with them and use as a resource throughout their lives. 

2. The component of self awareness is very important as it relates to mindfulness as well as the other components of SEL. Effective self awareness can help students regulate their feelings and emotions as well as the ability to live in the moment.    

3.  SEL can improve many areas of student development such as academics, career readiness, civil learning, equity, and mental health. It’s important to identify which of these areas that we need to focus on based on our needs as well as our position to make improvements. 

4. The webinar survey indicates that 76% of people are focusing on the mental health component of SEL. Part of this is due to the COVID Pandemic, however, the need for support of mental health has been trending upward. 

 5.  All 5 SEL competencies such as  self-awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making all mesh together and complement each other.I feel that focusing on self-awareness and self-management is a good place to start. Building self-awareness can help us lay the foundation and recognize our strengths as well as our areas where improvement is needed.  
    
The 10 indicators of school wide SEL is a great resource that can be implemented in many different capacities such as physical education class, coaching athletic teams and other extracurricular There is a broad range of benefits of SEL including improved academic outcomes and life outcomes, making SEL a wise financial investment for schools and other institutions. The CASEL wheel can be broken down into five main parts ranging from the self to interacting with others and responsible decision-making. The CASEL wheel also extends to key settings such as the classroom, schools, and family and caregivers. The key settings coordinate which policies and practices students experience to help grow their social-emotional competencies. There are a variety of ways schools can execute SEL beyond explicit instruction, such as integrating social-emotional skills into academic content.

One resource that I will use is the Guide to Schoolwide SEL: Classroom. In this resource, it offers a range of ideas and lesson plans teachers can use to build a supportive classroom environment.

My first thought is that there are many factors involved with Social Emotional Learning and that all are equally important.  I like that the wheel breaks it into categories.  I also appreciate that Melissa recommended focusing on a few at a time rather than all at once. 

Since I work with small groups I will use the CASEL wheel to help guide what areas I think my particular students could benefit from the most.  As I was listening to Melissa speak I could already picture what students were stronger in some areas but could really use guidance in others.    

1.  SEL is essential for academic and life success.  It helps students do well in school and life by teaching them how to manage emotions, set goals, and work with others.
2.  The CASEL core skills are: Self-awareness, Self-management, Social awareness, Relationship skills, and Responsible decision-making.  These five skills provide a structured way to understand and teach SEL and helps students develop the tools they need to navigate both personal and interpersonal challenges.
3.  SEL should be a part of everyday learning to support learning and emotional growth.
4.  As adults we need to model SEL.  We play a big role by showing our students and children how to manage feelings, build relationships and make good decisions.
5.  SEL is a long-term investment.  It helps students succeed academically and reduces problems like stress or behavior issues. I plan to use the CASEL Guide to SEL Programs as a resource from this video.

1.SEL benefits are long term. These are long term life outcomes. I think this is so important and something we don't talk about enough. SEL is one of those things that we talked about a lot for a while (Covid) and now we've gotten away from it. I hope our district will start talking about it more and placing importance on it again.

2. We have to understand ourselves to understand others. Kids have to be able to recognize their own emotions, feelings and reactions to social situations.

3.I heard a lot about a systemic curriculum for SEL. I wish our district had something like that. I don't think it's a stretch to say its important enough to put into our curriculum cycle. 

4."It's really important that school allocate time for SEL instruction but also equally important that this is included in the content students are learning". 

5. Adults in the school should have time to develop their own social emotional learning.

In seeing the acronym CASEL and signing up for this badge, I never made the connection that the “SEL” was for social-emotional learning.  Having already taken a few courses on SEL, the material is very familiar but I wasn’t aware that it has been around for over 20 years.  Their goal is to make SEL a part of every child’s education PreK through 12.  I think it is important more than ever with the increased awareness of mental health today. 
It makes sense that SEL leads to improved academic outcomes, long-term benefits, and improved long-term lifetime outcomes.  It was interesting to hear that it was also a wise financial investment and would like to learn more about that. 
I found the CASEL Wheel was packed with valuable information on the five SEL Competencies.  The wheel thoroughly explained the foundations for success in school, work, and in life.  It is important that we understand ourselves and have the skills to understand others to make responsible decisions. 
In school, SEL should be integrated into the curriculum to teach those skills.  Youth should have the opportunity to have their voices heard and make decisions and students should be engaged in SEL.  The climate and the culture of the school and in classrooms should be supportive.   
When getting started with implementing SEL there is a lot areas to improve on in the classroom, at school, with family, and in the community.  It is important to focus on priorities and not take on them all at once.
