5 Key Thoughts
  1. SEL or social emotional learning is the process where people acquire and apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes to manage emotions, make responsible decisions, and create healthy identities.
  2. Research on SEL clearly indicates that it is beneficial and leads to improved academic performance, behavior, is a smart financial investment, and improves lifetime outcomes.
  3. The key priorities of SEL are academics, college/career readiness, equity, mental health, and civic learning.
  4. Social and emotional learning includes self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness.  This type of learning begins in the classroom and stretches through the school building, creating partnerships with families and caregivers and finally reaching communities.
  5. There are resources available for SEL through CASEL.  These include district resources, schoolwide SEL, workshops, assessment guides, and information for students and families.

One resource that I will look into is the Guide to Schoolwide SEL.  I would like to check out ideas that I can incorporate into my classroom and that can become part of our regular school day.  I cannot control what happens schoolwide, but I can make a difference in my classroom and maybe one day see a schoolwide/districtwide program.
